Cupping Al Hijamah or Blood Stasis
Bekam By Mr Iqbal Gooljar at Muriatius

Last week we have received a very special student from Muriatius who come to Malaysia to study Cupping / Hijamah / Bekam at Department of Malay Medicine, Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia.

Mr Gooljar said, " There are a large number of Muslim community in Muriatius, and we cant find anybody doing Hijamah there. I was called to come forward to help the Muslim Community in perfoming this Therapeutic Sunnah of The Prophet Mohammad SAW. That is why I come to Malaysia, this is the only country in the world who teaches this syariaat of Islam, scientificly and in modern concept of healing."

Ibnu Abbas reported God's Messanger as saying " There is a remdy in three thing; the incision of a cupping glass, a drink of honey or cauterization of fire, but I forbid my people to cauterize" Hadith Bukhari From Miskat Al Masabih.

Learning from this hadith, there is no reason why the Muslim should avoid performing this Sunnah of Prophet Mohammad saw.

Acupuncture Treatment of Dysmenorrhoea

A Case Record / Research

Case History
Ms. Wang, a university student aged 2l years, paid her 1st visit on Aug. l6, l998, with the chief complaint of dysmenorrhea for one year. The patient complained that in the summer of l989, one day during her menstrual period when she walked in rain thus got cold. Later, she swam in cold water several times, leading to dysmenorrhea. In the past year when her menstrual period came, she would have unbearable sharp but cold pain in the lower abdomen two days before the menstruation started.
The pain would be somewhat relieved by warmth. During menstruation, the bleeding was scanty and dark with clots. Gynecological examination revealed that the size, location and movement of the uterus were all normal. She had been treated with western medicine to no avail. Therefore, this time she came to us for treatment. Examination showed that the patient was of medium height and well-developed but with sickly complexion.
Her blood pressure was ll5/70 mmHg, heart rate 80 bpm, and regular X-ray examination revealed normal heart and lungs. TCM examination showed a cold and tenderness in the lower abdomen with several tender points along the courses of the Spleen and Liver meridians at the medial sides of both legs, the tongue coating white-sticky and the pulse deep-wiry.

DiscussionDr. Wu: Let¡¯s analyses the case on the basis of her history.Dr. Zhang: I think this is a case of dysmenorrhea due to stagnation of cold anddampness. Her walking in rain and swimming in cold water constitute the causative factor for the invasion of cold and dampness into the body which stay in the uterus, leading to the stagnation of Qi and blood in the uterine collaterals, hence the pain.
By location differentiation, it should be in the uterus. In view of its clinical manifestations, cold-pain in the lower abdomen during the menstrual period, which responds to warmth is the sign of cold; while white-sticky tongue coating is the sign of dampness; and pain with tenderness belongs to the excess syndrome.

Dr. Li: I share the same view with Dr. Zhang. I only wan to add two points. One is about menstruation. As has been differentiated by Dr. Zhang, this case is due to stagnation of pathogenic cold-dampness in the uterus. The pathogenic cold results in restrained flow of Qi and blood, thus scanty menstruation occurs, whereas stagnated coldness contributes to the formation of blood clots. Another point is about the pulse.
Deep pulse indicates the disorder in the interior while wiry pulse usually indicates disorder of the liver and various types of pain (in this case the abdominal pain). Here, I would like to ask two questions. One is that as dysmenorrhea tends to appear before, after or during the menstrual period, what is the clinical significance of its occurrence at different time? The other question is, how to explain the obvious tender points along the medial sides of the patient's legs.

Dr. Wang: I agree with the analyses by both of you. I am not so clear either aboutDr. Li's two questions. Dr. Wu, would you please explain to us?Dr. Wu: First of all, I should say that you've given objective and exact analyses of this case. The questions raised by Dr. Li are of universal significance, and I would like to answer them one by one. First, the time of dysmenorrhea: Generally speaking, dysmenorrhea lasts the whole period of menstruation, but specific individuals vary in time.
Clinically, dysmenOrrhea occurring before or during the menstrual period often belongs to the excess syndrome, whereas that after the period belongs mostly to the deficiency syndrome. The causative factors for the excess syndrome of dysmenorrhea are stagnation of Qi and blood stasis, and stagnation of cold in the uterus, affecting the normal flow of menstrual blood, and resulting in the pain during the menstrual period.
In the excess syndrome, lower abdominal distending pain before or during the menstrual period is mostly due to stagnation of Qi and blood stasis, while lower abdominal cold-pain which can be somewhat relieved by warmth is mostly due to stagnation of cold. Of course, in our clinical practice, differentiations should also be based on other clinical manifestations.
The lower abdominal dull pain during or after the menstrual period which can be slightly relieved by pressing, with a pale complexion, weakness, light-red and scanty menstrual bleeding, white tongue coating, and thready-weak pulse are often caused by deficiency and loss of Qi and blood failing to nourish the uterine collaterals.
The case we are discussing now belongs to the excess syndrome due to stagnation of cold in the uterus.Second, the question about the tender points along the lower limbs: tender points are also called reaction points. According to TCM theory, when a certain organ of the human body is in disorder, it may have reactions in the corresponding part on the body and disorders of different organs have different reaction points.
Clinically, reaction points can often be found on the back or along the courses of meridians corresponding to the Zang-Fu organs. Doctors may try to find these reaction points by means of palpation so as to help make diagnosis. Menstruation is related to the Chong and Ren meridians both of which originate in the uterus and connect with the three Yin meridians of the foot in the abdomen. In case of irregular menstruation, certain reaction points may be found along the courses of the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney meridians.
What about the treatment principle and prescription for this case?Dr. Wang: I think the principle of treatment should be based on differentiations. Since this case is induced by stagnation of cold in the uterus, the treatment should be aimed at clearing away cold and dampness with warmth to promote a free flow of blood and to check pain. Acupuncture and moxibustion can be applied in combination.
The prescription: Zhongji (CV 3), Shuidao (ST 28), and Sanyinjiao (SP6). Analysis: Zhongji (CV 3) is a point on the Ren meridian connected with the uterus (moxibustion on it can give the effect of promoting a free flow of Qi in the uterine collaterals), and Shuidao (ST 28) is a point on the Foot Yangming meridian which is connected with the Chong meridian, therefore, the combined use of Zhongji (CV 3) and Shuidao (ST 28) can give the effect of checking pain by warming the meridians. Sanyinjiao (SP 6), a point on the Spleen meridian, can not only exert the effect of strengthening the spleen to eliminate dampness, but also regulating the flow of blood and checking pain.
Dr. Li: I agree with Dr. Wang's opinion on the treatment principle and point prescription. Here, I would like to add some other points to his prescription. Points Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong (LR 3) can be added to enhance the pain-checking effect. Besides, Ashi points located near point Diji (SP 8) can be selected too.

Dr. Zhang: I think auricular points can be used in combination, such as Uterus, Endocrine, Sympathetic Nerve, Kidney, Liver and Spleen.
Dr. Wu: After hearing your discussion as well as your proposals, I have got a comprehensive view in terms of the treatment principle and methods. Now I have two points to add here. One is the time and length of treatment for dysmenorrhea. Sincedysmenorrhea is characterized by periodic pain, corresponding measures of treatment should be taken.
Generally acupuncture treatment starts one week before menstruationstarts, once every other day 20 minutes each time until the end of menstruation. Thetreatment continues twice a week after menstruation finishes, altogether 5 treatmentsfor each menstrual cycle.
Then, the same treatment starts again one week before the coming menstruation. The treatment is usually given for 3 menstrual cycles. The second point is that doctors should tell the patients to pay attention to menstrual hygiene and avoid eating cold and raw food. Pathogenic cold and dampness may directly invade the Zang-Fu organs because of intake of cold and raw food or hands and feet being soaked in cold water.
It is particularly easy for pathogenic cold to invade the abdomen through the three Yin meridians of the foot. Other pains may also be caused due to invasion of cold into the human body which blocks the meridians and affects a free flow of Qi and blood.

Treatment and ResultsThe above-mentioned acupuncture therapy was applied, with the uniform reinforcing-reducing method adopted for point Zhongii (CV 3) and Shuidao (ST 28), and moxibustion were also given. The reducing method was used for Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Hegu (LI 4), Taichong (LR 3), and the Ashi points on the lower limbs.
Aricular seed-embedding therapy was used in combination. Beginning from Aug. 16 (the day When she paid her first visit), the patient was treated three times. When her menstrual period began, she felt much relieved from pain. Another two treatments were given after the period. The same treatment began on Sep. l1, seven days before the second cycle of menstrual period. After treatment for 5 menstrual cycles, the patient's pain was completely checked. Another 5 treatments were given for consolidation. Follow-up given half a year later showed no recurrences.

Stroke & Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture in Stroke Treatment
by Russ Erickson, MD

Acupuncture therapy for stroke-caused conditions such as paralysis, speech and swallowing problems, and depression is commonly used in the Orient. In China and Japan, an acupuncturist is likely to start therapy as soon as possible after a stroke. However, my recommendation is a delay of 2 weeks before acupuncture for strokes caused by bleeding in the brain, 10 to 20% of strokes (instead of the usual blood vessel block or clot). The wait is due to studies showing that acupuncture opens blood vessels for better flow and decreases clotting and inflammation. These effects are desired early when arteries are blocked, but after a stroke caused by bleeding has occurred, it is safer to wait until the bleeding blood vessel has clotted and is unlikely to bleed further before providing the acupuncture.

Acupuncture is done on a daily basis in China. Uncertain as to whether daily acupuncture is essential, even in Western countries, some acupuncturists with experience in treating stroke with acupuncture believe treatment 3 times a week is optimal. Several different approaches have been used to treat stroke, demonstrating that acupuncture for this disorder remains a healthcare art: Traditional Chinese Yang meridian point therapy, Chinese scalp acupuncture,
Dr. Yamamoto's YNSA Japanese scalp therapy, Korean Koryo Chim hand acupuncture, supplemental ear (auricular) acupuncture, and Xingnao KaiQiao (a newer therapy by Professor Shi Xuemin) are each advocated by a number of treatment centers in Oriental countries. One need not know in depth the approach of each, but it is important to know that more than one approach is available and used.

Does acupuncture really work to help stroke victims improve? Many studies involving thousands of patients have been published in China and Japan, and 2 of 3 studies from Scandinavia, demonstrated significant help. These studies indicate that patients get well faster, perform better in self-care, require less nursing and rehabilitation therapy, and use less healthcare dollars. However, since most studies come from China, they get little credence from the Western medical community because researchers in China do not appear to be published unless their results are highly positive, so publication bias is possible.
And, no money has been made available in the United States for studies needed to confirm the claims of experts in China and Japan of indeed helping stroke patients. Such studies, if done well, demand significant funding; sources of such money are difficult to find. Most physicians, including rehabilitation experts, have appeared unwilling to consider acupuncture therapy, not due to bias but because the published studies do not necessarily meet research study criteria for the United States.

Acupuncture is a safe therapy, and my experience has taught that this is especially true when helping stroke victims. Even discomfort is generally minimal. If one compares the possible positive help to be obtained with the risks associated with acupuncture, my contention is that acupuncture is worthy to attempt for stroke therapy. Studies are needed in the United States to prove this to medical skeptics. It will be important for such studies to involve skilled acupuncturists with experience in stroke therapy.

Adding acupuncture to rehabilitation therapy obviously increases the cost; daily-to-3 times-weekly treatment is needed for 2-4 weeks or longer. Concern for added cost would perhaps disappear if the end result demonstrates more self-care and less dependence on family and health providers.

What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture The Classical Chinese Medicine Before

Now Acupuncture is no more Chinese, it is a World Heritage.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago. Acupuncture literally means 'needle piercing," the practice of inserting very fine needles into the skin to stimulate specific anatomic points in the body (called acupoints or acupuncture points) for therapeutic purposes.

Along with the usual method of puncturing the skin with the fine needles, the practitioners of acupuncture also use heat, pressure, friction, suction, or impulses of electromagnetic energy to stimulate the points. The acupoints (acupuncture points) are stimulated to balance the movement of energy (qi) in the body to restore the hands or by electrical stimulation.

Acupuncture has been a major part of primary healthcare in China for the last 2,000 years. It is used extensively for a variety of medical purposes ranging from the prevention and treatment of disease, to relieving pain and anesthetizing patients for surgery. As in many oriental medicine practices, the emphasis of acupuncture is on prevention. In traditional Chinese medicine, the highest form of acupuncture was given to enable you to live a long, healthy life.

There are 365 main acupuncture points spaced all over the body. These are the main points that an acupuncturist will use in daily treatment. There are also over 500 local, non meridian and master points that are not as commonly used. Each of the points has an ancient name that is very important part of Five Element Acupuncture. Some of these pertain to the points location, a lot of them are to do with the Spirit of the Point. The Spirit of the Point is about the particular healing energy available from that point.Below is five examples of Acupuncture Points and their spirits, one chosen from one of each of the Five Elements.

- FAHOM- (Rtgd)

was founded by Prof. Dr. Nik Omar from Kota Baru, Kelantan, who was also the founder of The Malaysian Homeopathic Medical Practitioner Association (MRHP), Doctors Without Barriers (International) and Research Institute of Medical Acupuncture.

Surely nothing worthwhile is ever accomplished over night. This Faculty also carries its accomplishment; a long story of two decades of devoted service of Dr. Nik Omar's dedicated studies and services to the course of homeopathy in Malaysia and worldwide.

In 1970 Nik Omar left to take Homeopathic Course at Pakistan Homeopathic Medical College & Homeopathic Trust Hospital. He qualified his DHMS studies in 1975 and went to London, England to further his studies in homeopathy in the morning and in the evening his runs his private at Kilburn High Street, London.

Most of his patients are Malaysian Student in London, Arabs and African. He also treated MARA students as far as Cambridge, Bounemouth and Liverpool.

In 1977 he came to Malaysia and started the first modern homeopathic clinic with full and well equipped medical instruments. At this time, homeopathy was little known and widely misunderstood. But slowly and steadily, with the abilities of cure brought about by his tiny and sweets medicines won much acclaim for homeopathy.

The Formation of Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia

On the 10 April 1979, with only seven students, Dr Nik Omar began teaching homeopathy at his clinic and thus laying the foundation of the first registered homeopathic college in Malaysia, with the name of " The Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia"

At he end of 2002 the enroll at the Faculty has reached 4000 students, all all the 4 Department such as Department of Homeopathy ( Major), Department of Chinese Medicine - Research Institute of Medical Acupuncture, Department of Malay Medicine and De[partment of Complementary Medicine . Example of module courses of homeopathic medicine are base on the credit hours of studies, such :-

Basic Diploma Course is one year- DFHom
Bachelor of Homeopathic Medical Science - four years -BHMS
Doctorate Course - Five Years - M.D.Hom.

While Department of Chinese Medicine - Acupuncture we offer two courses
Diploma in Acupuncture two years
Master of Acupuncture Four Years.

In addition to the main University Campus at Gelang Mas, Pasir Mas, Kelantan, there are another five Faculty of Homeopathic Medical Centres, throughout Malaysia ( Kota Bharu, Penang, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur ) which regularly provide clinical training in different subjects for local and foreign students.

The subjects of Classical Homeopathy, such as Principle of Homeopathy, Organon of Medicine, Homeopathic Pharmacy, Materia Medica and Philosophy are taught and many liberal subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, Microbiology, Hygiene, Gynecology, Obstetric, Paeditric, Medical Jurisprudence, Minor Surgery, First Aid, etc are covered.

Unfortunately at the same time, bogus institution under the name of Academy / college / Institute / Round Tables University, etc sprung up offering diploma and degree for three to six months of studies. Much harm was done to homeopathy because of this bogus institute.
Some are runs by highly professional people who hold degrees and retired professor from Engineering, Accountant etc who works as part time homeopath.

The Formation of Homeopathic Medical Practitioners Association

Due to this situation Dr Nik Omar and other institutionally trained homeopathic practitioners prompted the government to pass a decree and was gazette by parliament (Gazette No. 104 /84 ) by the name of Registered Malaysian Homeopathic Medical Practitioners Association, just to unite all qualified homeopathic practitioners into one platform.

The first founder president is Prof Dr Nik Omar with Dr Mohammad Ali Hamzah is its Secretary General. The headquarter are located at No.11, Bangunan Tabung Haji Lama, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia.

And now after 25 years of our struggles, homeopathy has been recognized by Ministry of Health Malaysia. Thanks to Prof Nik Omar and his friends in FAHOM & MRHP who always supported him in his struggles for recognization.

Homeopathic Activities Under The Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia

With strong and united 2000 students we have organized:
200 homeopathic clinic throughout Malaysia and abroad. Free treatment to rural areas in Malaysia Served In Afghanistan with Free Fighter Served in Pakistan Refugee Camps,Served In Thailand Nakorn Flood Disaster Served in Sri Lanka Poorest Slum Areas, etc

Homeopathy in Malaysia is very new, that is why Dr. Nik started giving lectures and seminars on Homeopathy. Up until 1999 he had organized 20 Homeopathic Congress locally and 6 Internationally ( 1981, 1989 , 1998 , 2000, 2002 and 2006 )

In promoting homeopathy in Malaysia he has written hundred of articles about his work in local and oversea journal regularly. He speaks on homeopathy in radio's and TV's and also an active International homeopathic community and considered as the specialist and at present it is consider as one of the best homeopath in Malaysia.

Currently, he is conducting a study of infertility and homeopathic treatment, which has brought of his most celebrated successes.

With only seven students in 1979, it is becoming one of the largest followers of homeopathy in Malaysia with more then 2000 students and 500 strong members of MRHP. Besides that, Dr Nik has set up his own version of French Medical Volunteer Force, "Homeopathic Doctor Without Barrier" (DRWB).

Up till now he has been able to arrange almost 50 assignment for Malaysian volunteers including locally and oversea. He has served in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia. He is always ready with new assignment and duties to carry out the charity organizational works and he is proud of the fact that almost all his assignment is successfully done well in time. The help provided by DRWB is financed exclusively by donations and supports from public and members of his organization.

As a new form of treatment, homeopathy in Malaysia has few followers; it is the faith of the few and shows sign of becoming the faith of the many

Message From Ex Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahadir Mohammed

I would like to congratulate The Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia and The Asian Homoeopathic Medical League for hosting the 10th Homoeopathic Science Congress.

This is the second time such an International Homeopathic Science Conference (IHS) is being held in Malaysia. That The Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia has gained support and confidence from members of Asian countries is reflected in the hosting of this conference.

It is hoped that the congress will deliberate on ways in which to improve homeopathic science not only in Malaysia but worldwide as this could provide a useful complement to modern medicine. I extend my best wishes to all participants and hope that their efforts will be fruitful in helping to solve some of the health problems in the country.
