What Is Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy, called "qi", that circulates through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. An imbalance in the flow of qi throughout a meridian is how disease begins.

Acupuncturists insert needles into specified points along meridian lines to influence the restore balance to the flow of qi. There are over 1,000 acupuncture points on the body.

In 1997, acupuncture needles were reclassified from "experimental" to "medical device" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The National Institutes of Health released a consensus statment in the same year endorsing acupuncture for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as post-operative pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Acupuncture is one of the best known of the alternative therapies. The FDA estimates that people in the United States spend more than $500 million annually on acupuncture treatments. Many people have insurance coverage for acupuncture.

Oriental medicine is a very comprehensive system of medicine. It works with your body to produce true healing instead of suppressing symptoms. A few of the conditions successfully treated by acupuncture and Oriental medicine:

General

* Women’s issues, including painful periods, menopause, and other gynecological issues. These are treated without requiring uncomfortable examinations.
* Chronic pain, especially joint and muscle pain, arthritis, as well as headaches and other discomforts.
* Fatigue, including chronic fatigue syndrome, or a general feeling of being down.
* Most conditions that respond to drug treatment, respond even better to acupuncture and Chinese herbs - without side effects. However, we insist on partnering with your doctor to determine a proper course of treatment. Some medications need special care and planning.
* Most chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, and more respond extremely well to acupuncture.

Acupuncture treatment

All treatments begin with a proper diagnosis, which takes place during your first visit. We spend a lot of time getting a complete picture of your health and lifestyle. We examine the condition of your tongue (is it cracked, coated, excessively pink? etc.), and check your pulse on both wrists (the quality of your pulse gives information about possible imbalances). We’ll also ask questions about your emotional state, and specific symptoms you may have. This is done because unlike Western medicine, we treat the whole person. Instead of merely focusing on the symptoms of your condition, we treat the underlying cause of those symptoms.

The first visit (with diagnosis) lasts about an hour and a half and ends with an acupuncture treatment. Your subsequent visits will be much faster - usually an hour long. We make a short review of your progress followed by an acupuncture treatment.

If it’s warranted, we also prescribe an herbal formula. Herbs are nearly always prescribed in a balanced formula, where different herbs have supporting effects. Thousands of years of use and research have shown that this is far more effective than large doses of a single substance.

Typically acupuncture treatments are given once a week. If the condition is acute and painful, treatments may be given 2-3 times per week until the condition starts to come under control. The exact duration of treatment depends on the condition, your basic level of health, and how well you respond to acupuncture.

Acupuncture

Needle insertion

While acupuncture can involve a variety of treatment methods it is most closely and most often associated with the insertion of needles. The needles that are inserted are very thin, filiform (solid) and sterile. They are placed into selected and known points of the body where they promote a healing process and can relieve pain. Generally the insertion of these needles is painless, however every patient is different and some may experience a momentary discomfort. This usually passes quickly. Other normal sensations with the insertion of the needles includes a feeling of warmth, a dull aching or a tingling feeling at the site of the insertion or along the associated acupuncture meridian.

Vertigo , Dizziness and Disequilibrium

Hello Dr Nik
>
> I have been travelling around South East Asia for 5 weeks. For the past few days I have had a strong reaction to my malaria medication, Lariam. There is a very long list of side effects when using this drug, but for me it's affecting my balance. For 3 days I have been suffering from constant vertigo, dizziness, and disequilibrium. I was wondering if acupuncture could cure these symptoms as I don't want to take any other drugs. If so, how much would 1 session cost? I will be in Kuala Lumpur for 1 day on the 22nd December, or perhaps longer if I feel too unwell to catch my connecting flight. Could you help?
>
> Many thanks

Mark

Answer: Yes you are welcome to our medical centre, acupuncture is one of the best way to tear such problems. You are welcome

Thanks

Dr Nik
