The Model of Chinese Calender

The model of Chinese Calendar
From Pulse-Academy.org

New presentation of Zi Wu Liu Zhu method:

The basis for the calculation of date and time in ancient China was the cycle of 60. In this cycle, what are called 10 Stems and 12 Branches are matched together. The term Stem refers to the cyclic variations (circadian rhythms) that apply to the evolution of all natural phenomena, biologic ones included. The 12 Branches are the time units and each defines a two-hour period during the day. They also indicate the lunar months. For each Stem and Branch there is a well-established correspondence with the Five Elements and their belonging to either Yin or Yang. As such, the Stems and the Branches are associated with the Yin and Yang interdependence and the waxing and waning of the circulation of Qi and blood in the meridians. One should recall that the circulation of Qi starts in the Gall Bladder meridian at 23hours and that there is a two-hour period of waxing of Qi circulation for each principal meridian. Various methods are used to calculate the open points, which are based on the cycle of 60 and the different combinations of the Stems and Branches.

- The Zi Wu Liu Zhu method uses the Five Shu points and several options to choose from are provided based on different rationales:
Open Shu points are generated based on the interrelations between meridians as they result from the interpromoting cycle of the Five Elements and the provision that Qi circulation starts from GB 44

Each time an open Source-Yuan point is selected, adding the Luo point of the exteriorly-interiorly connected meridian will enhance the therapeutic effect. The Luo (Connecting) points are sites of convergence for the Qi of the principal meridians; therefore impairments in Qi and blood circulation can be treated accordingly.

In case the Shu point one wishes to use is not open at a certain time, applying the Five Elements interpromoting cycle to the two-hour period of waxing Qi and starting with GB 44 every 24 minutes another open Shu point is generated. When extended to the two-hour waxing time of all 12 principal meridians, this rationale provides 60 open points every day. Consequently, some points are open almost always, which gives more flexibility to open points selection.
Selecting points from the same group. According to ancient stipulations, every two Stems and Branches in a particular order belong to the same group. As such, when at a given date and time no point is open, one can use points that are open on the day and time belonging to the same group. Using points from the same group expands the selection options.

Selecting points from the Partner day. In case the point you want to use is closed because his open time has just passed, points open in the Partner day can be used. The rationale is that Stems are coupled together in pairs at an interval of five. The corresponding type of days are said to be partners. For example, what is your option if you want to use SI 1 but its time (15-17 hours) has just passed? Small Intestine belongs to Fire and so does the Heart as they are exteriorly-interiorly related. So HT 4 can be used for SI 1, which is opened in the partner day at 17-19 hours, since HT 4 is the Shu point belonging to Fire.
In the two-hour period of waxing activity in each principal meridian, any point of the meridian can be selected or points can be selected, based on the Mother-Son rule. The Mother and Son rule applies to the flow of Qi: every meridian that gives away energy is called the "Mother" and every meridian that receives energy is called the "Son". The "Mother" is tonified and the "Son" is reduced. Points can be selected from the meridian involved or from meridians generated from the interpromoting cycle.
Careful work over acupuncture rules of Zi Wu Liu Zhu open points model had lead to the construction as follow:

Here are explanations to the table:

- The whole cycle consists of two parts of 60 steps.
- The whole cycle consists of 11 areas (there are lines in the table), 10 of them have 11 steps, but the last one has only 10 steps. (The Sun has 11 years period of activity!)
- Each of 10 lines is also small cycle of 120 steps and the 11-Th step consists of only 10 substeps. The type of the first substep depends on number in decade
1. Yang of Wood
2. Yin of Wood
3. Yang of Fire
4. Yin of Fire
5. Yang of Earth
6. Yin of Earth
7. Yang of Metal
8. Yin of Metal
9. Yang of Water
10. Yin of Water
0. Fire Minister is placed between Yang of Water and Yin of Water.
This numbers are in the right column of the Table.
- Each step in cycle is also cycle of 120 supersubsteps with the same structure as the main cycle. Thus, the main cycle also has some number and relation to some Element among other large cycles.
The cell of the table has information as follow:
- Number of Steam and Branch (S1B12, S1B1 ...),
- Name of Meridian and active Qi in it (T-Water - Qi of Wood in Water Meridian). Qi have names: T - Wood Qi, F - Fire Qi, E- Earth Qi, M - Metal Qi, W - Water Qi. Meridians at Yin conditions have written form of Qi as follow: F(W), E(T) .... It means at Yin condition active Qi is found in accordance with Wu-Xing law by rule - Who is suppressing me? In case of Fire Qi the Water Qi suppresses Fire Qi - that is why we have entry F(W),

- Acupuncture point that should be activated during period of the step,
- Number of step in cycle under of above mentioned information,
Other details of cycle:
- 11 lines in the table are even (2,4,6,8,10,0) and odd (1,3,5,7,9). At even period Yin meridians are stimulated directly and Yang meridians - in accordance with Wu-Xing law by rule "Who is suppressing me?". At odd period type of activation is inversed.

- The presented structure may be imposed on any cycle in acupuncture. The Key factor is the point of rest of cycles. This information is given to users of the Pulse Metabolic Analysis (PMA). PMA users can download test version, where conditions of energies in meridians are presented in matrix "Qi disorders" (http://pulse-academy.org/en/PMA_software_1.021_En_test). At present no diagnosis system in the world can calculate deviations of definite Qi at given meridian. This work can do only Pulse Metabolic Analysis.

First Acupuncture Treatment

What To Expect from Acupuncture Visits

During your first office visit, the practitioner may ask you at length about your health condition, lifestyle, and behavior. The practitioner will want to obtain a complete picture of your treatment needs and behaviors that may contribute to your condition. Inform the acupuncturist about all treatments or medications you are taking and all medical conditions you have.

Acupuncture needles are metallic, solid, and hair-thin. People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people feel energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Improper needle placement, movement of the patient, or a defect in the needle can cause soreness and pain during treatment. This is why it is important to seek treatment from a qualified acupuncture practitioner.
Treatment may take place over a period of several weeks or more.

The Miracle Healing of Prof Dr Nik Omar, Malaysia

Homeopathy Hometruths
Yes to Doctor No
by Alison Nadel

A British Journalist From MAS Magazin

Photo: Dr Nik Omar & President International Homeopathic Medical League at
Oostense, Belgium May 2008

The waiting Room of Dr Nik Omar's clinic is busy. A school boy whose asthma cleared up within a day of homeopathic medicine has come back for some medicine to treat cold. A young woman is waiting for a pregnancy check up and to start a course of medicine for an easy birth. A man whose severe migraines vanished after being treat by Dr Nik six months ago, has dropped in to pick up a repeat prescription.

For them, there is no question that homeopathy works. Like many of Dr Nik's patients, they show little concern

about how or why it is effective. Only a few of the people in his waiting room say that they have come because homeopathy use natural substances. More stress the fact that it is cheap. One elderly man, partially paralysed and walking with a stick, says that since his last heart attack, there is nothing more that his doctor can do for him. Homeopathic is his last hope.

Dr Nik Omar does not fit the stereo type of the dedicated healer quietly pioneering his art. He is too bullish. Both his colleagues and his rivals acknowledge his tremendous energy. All recognize that he, more than any one, is responsible for raising the homeopathic medicine profile in Malaysia.

Dr Nik has written hundred of articles about his work. He is an active member of the international homeopathic community. In 1979 he set up his own version like the French Medical Volunteer Force, medicine sans frontier. He called his, Homeopathic Doctors Without Barrier. He says that his mission in life is to bring homeopathic medicines to every Malaysian man, woman and child.

Dr Nik has trainning in both western and homeopathic medicine. He studies both subjects for five years in Pakistan before going to Britain to train at London Foot Hospital, School of Chiropody, University College, London for two years.

Homeopathic has always been his primary interest. When he returned to Malaysia in 1977, it was homeopathic practice, not a chiropody clinic, that he set up in his home town of Kota Bharu.
Currently, he is conducting a study of infertility which brought one of his most celebrated successes. he calls of a a couple who has been married for 12 years without having children until in desperation, they came to see him.

" They have tried everything In-Vitro, IUI, GIFT and faith healer," he says, " Within only three months of councelling and homeopathic treatment, the women's pregnant was confirmed."
Dr Nik pepares his own medicine from ingredients imported from European countries, US, India and Pakistan. He has seen many miraculous in his treatment. The dosage are tiny and sweets. A standard homeopathic medicine is 'Sulphur' In its homoeopathic form a grain of sulphur is diluted in 99 parts of water and alcohol. This is its 'first potency'. A drop of that mixture is then diluted again in 99 parts of water and alcohol. This is it 'second potency'. This process is repeated until the 30 th potency. No trace of the sulphur remains. All that is said to be left are 'sulphur's medcicinal powers'.

Dr Nik does not, however, dismiss the need for conventional treatment. " No system of medicine has the right to claim it can cure everything, " he said. " If someone appendix is about to burst, they must go for immediate surgery. But if the disease is caught early enough, and treated with homeopathic, then surgery would became almost redundant."

Desspite of this claims being made by Dr Nik and numerous other homeopathic doctors in the world, homeopathy has yet to be welcomed by the orthodox medical establishment with open arms. In a country where alternative system of medicine proliferate, homeopathy suffers from being seen as just another treatment liking any scientific basis.

Such criticism is a sad fact of homeopathic life. Dr Nik treat it likely and points out that homeopathy has face of a long tradition of official opposition since it founder, Samuel Hahnemann was kicked out of Leipzig, nearly 200 years ago. For him the proof of the pudding is in the patients.

EYE ACUPUNCTURE

Akupunktur Bahagian Mata
Oleh Nik Fairuz Hakim
Registrar Jabatan Pengajian China - Akupunktur
Fakulti Perubatan Homeopathy Malaysia, kelantan
http://kelantan.xaper.com/

The Eye Acupuncture therapy, is used to treat diseases by applying acupuncture at the acupoints around the eyeball and on orbital edge and it is developed from the 'diagnostic method of diseases by inspecting 'eyes' established by Hua Tuo ( a famous ancient physician in Han's Dynasty in China ) and after analyzing and summarizing the clinical observation and treatment of physicians in following successive dynasties.

After a diagnosis is made by observing the minute changes of blood vessels on conjunctiva of eye, the acupoints around the eyes are selected according to the principle of differential diagnosis and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various diseases, such as acute muscular sprain, early stage of apolepxy ( stroke) with hemiplegia and diseases of pain with a good therapeutic effect.

Theoretical basis of Eye Acupuncture

The origin or terminals of 8 out of 12 channel / meridians ( except lung, spleen, kidney and pericardium meridians ) are located in the region around eye, but the latter 4 meridians have an indirect connection with the eye through a link with their exterointeriorly correlated meridians. As mentioned in Miraculous Pivot, an ancient classical book on acupuncture:

- " The essence of all internal organs can be supplied to eyes…"
- " the blood and qi of 12 meridians and 365 collaterals can be supplied to the orifices on face ; and the Yang qi is supplied to eyes to produce the essence of eyes.."
- "All meridians are connected with eyes." Sue Wen
- " The eye is an organ to which all meridian assemble."

Therefore, the eyes are closely related to the internal organs and meridians and acupuncture applied at the acupoints around the eye can be used to treat many diseases of the whole body.

Laser in Acupuncture

LASER IN ACUPUNCTURE
By Ac Nik Fairuz Hakim bin Nik Omar

Laser stands for “Light Amplification by Simulated Emission of Radiation” lasers have become a rage in the west. It was therefore not long before a laser acupuncture therapy apparatus was designed and made there. In acupuncture, the laser beam is directed at acupuncture points to bring about relief. From the patient’s point of view, it is well accepted as there is no needle penetration.

The laser used in acupuncture therapy has helium-Neon gas (Hene Laser) as the emitting source of radiation. It has an output of 25 milliwatts, a penetration depth of 5 mm and a wavelength of 6,320 Angstrom units (red part of the spectrum). The red part of the spectrum is capable of the highest level of transmission and skin penetration. The theoretical basis of laser stimulation is that acupuncture points are specific points where absorption of various forms of energies like heat, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, etc., is greater than in the surrounding area.

Stimulation in this therapy is caused solely by absorption of light through the skin. Considering that the penetration of the skin is only 5 mm as against the average depth of 1 to 1.5 cuns by needle penetration, the main use of laser therapy is in skin conditions
The laser is giving wonderful results in cosmetic conditions like acne, pimples, wrinkles, scars, etc. it can also be used in children’s diseases, especially in deafness.

The cost of acupuncture laser varies from RM 500 to RM 5,000. At the moment the German Acupuncture Laser from Sieman & Co is considered as the best.
Much work still remains to be done in charting out more and more applications of this master innovation.

How Does Acupuncture Works

How does acupuncture work?

The Eastern Explanation for how Acupunctures works is that the life energy flowing through the body which is termed Qi (pronounced chee) can be influenced and balanced by stimulating specific points on the body. These points are located along channels of energy known as meridians that connect all of our major organs. According to Chinese medical theory, illness arises when the cyclical flow of Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced or is blocked.

Western Explanation: Definition of Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points located near or on the surface of the skin which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve the desired effect. Explanation of How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture points are areas of designated electrical sensitivity. Inserting needles at these points stimulates various sensory receptors that, in turn, stimulate nerves that transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system at the base of the brain.

The hypothalamus-pituitary glands are responsible for releasing neurotransmitters and endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing hormones. It is estimated that endorphins are 200 times more potent than morphine. Endorphins also play a big role in the functioning of the hormonal system. This is why acupuncture works well for back pain and arthritis and also for P.M.S. and infertility.

The substances released as a result of acupuncture not only relax the whole body, they regulate serotonin in the brain which plays a role in human and animal disposition. This is why depression is often treated with acupuncture.

Some of the physiological effects observed throughout the body include increased circulation, decreased inflammation, relief from pain, relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count which stimulates the immune system.

History of Acupuncture In China

Sejarah Akupunktur di Negara China

HISTORY OF ACUPUNCTURE IN CHINA

Acupuncture is a very ancient form of healing which pre-dates recorded
history .The philosophy is rooted in the Taoist tradition which goes
back over 8000 years. The people of this time period would meditate
and observe the flow of energy within and without. They also were keen
to observe man's relations with nature and the universe. There were many
sages of this period, but the most legendary was Fu Hsi, who lived in the
Yellow River area of China approximately 8000 years ago.

By observing nature, he formulated the first two symbols, a broken line and unbroken line.
These symbols represented the two major forces in the universe - creation
and reception - and how their interaction forms life. This duality was
named yin-yang and they represent the backbone of Chinese Medicine
theory and application.Fu hsi then discovered that when yin-yang fuse,
a creative action occurs, and this gives birth to a third aspect.

Fu Hsi then pondered on how this triplicity occurs eight times and this led to
the eight trigrams and then 64 hexagrams of the I-Ching (Book of Change).
The I-Ching shaped the thinking for years to come and every influential
book on Chinese Medicine is based upon its fundamental philosophy.
The primitive society of China is divided into two time periods-

The Old Stone Age(10,000 years ago and beyond) and the New Stone Age
(10,000-4000 years ago).During the Old Stone Age knives were made
of stone and were used for certain medical procedures.During the New
Stone Age, stones were refined into fine needles and served as
instruments of healing.

They were named bian stone - which means use of a sharp edged stone to treat disease. Many bian stone needleswere excavated from ruins in China dating back to the New Stone Age.
The most significant milestone in the history of Acupuncture occurred
during the period of Huang Di -The Yellow Emperor (2697-2597).
In a famous dialogue between Huang Di and his physician Qi Bo, they
they discuss the whole spectrum of the Chinese Medical Arts.

These conversations would later become the monumental text -
The Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine).
The Nei Jing is the earliest book written on Chinese Medicine.
It was compiled around 305-204 B.C. and consists of two parts:
1. The Su Wen(Plain Questions) -9 volumes - 81 chapters
The Su Wen introduces anatomy and physiology, etiology of disease,
pathology, diagnosis, differentiation of syndromes, prevention, yin-yang,
five elements, treatment, and man's relationship with nature and the cosmos.
2.: The Ling Shu (Miraculous Pivot,Spiritual Axis)- 81 Chapters
The Ling Shu's focus is Acupuncture, description of the meridians,
functions of the zang-fu organs, nine types of needles, functions of the
acupuncture points, needling techniques, types of Qi, location of 160 points.

Approximately 1000 BC, during the Shang Dynasty, hieroglyphs showed
evidence of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Bronze needles
were excavated from ruins, but the bian stones remained the main
form of needle.

During the Warren States Era(421-221 B.C.) metal needles replaced
the bian stones. Four gold needles and five silver needles were found
in an ancient tomb dating back to 113B.C. The Miraculous Pivot
names nine types of Acupuncture needles. The Historical Records
notes many physicians practicing Acupuncture during this time.

Another milestone for this period was the compilation of the Nan Jing
(Book of Difficult Questions). The Nan Jing discusses five element
theory, hara diagnosis, eight extra meridians, and other important topics.
From 260-265 A.D., the famous physician Huang Fu Mi, organized
all of the ancient literature into his classic text -Systematic Classics
of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. The text is twelve volumes and
describes 349 Acupuncture points.

It is organized according to thetheory of: zang fu, Qi and blood, channels and colllaterals, acupuncture points, and clinical application. This book is noted to be one of the
most influential text in the history of Chinese Medicine.

Acupuncture was very popular during the Jin, Northern,Southern,
Dynasties (265-581A.D.). For generations the Xu Xi family were
known as the experts in the art of Acupuncture.During this time period
important texts and charts enhanced knowledge and application.
Acupuncture experienced great development during the Sui (581-618)
and Tang (618-907) Dynasties.Upon request from the Tang
Government (627-649A.D.), the famous physician Zhen Quan revised
the important Acupuncture texts and charts.

Another famous physician of the time, Sun Simio, wrote Prescription with a Thousand Gold for
Emergencies (650-692). This text includes data on Acupuncture from
various scholars. During this period Acupuncture became a special branch of
of medicine and practitioners were named Acupuncturists. Acupuncture
schools appeared, and Acupuncture education became part of the Imperial
Medical Bureau.

During the Song Dynasty (960-1279),the famous physician Wang Weiyi
wrote, The Illustrated Manual on Points for Acupuncture and
Moxibustion. This book included the description of 657 points.
He also casted two bronze statues on which meridians and points were
engraved for teaching purposes.

The Ming Dynasty (1568-1644) was the enlightening period for the
advancement of Acupuncture. Many new developments included:

1. revision of the classic texts
2.Refinement of Acupuncture techniques and manipulation
3.Development of Moxa sticks for indirect treatment
4.Development of extra points outside the main meridians
5.The encyclopedic work of 120 volumes- Principle and Practice
of Medicine was written by the famous physician Wang Gendung
6.1601 - Yang Jizhou wrote Zhenjin Dacheng ( Principles of
Acupuncture and Moxibustion. This great treatise on Acupuncture
reinforced the principles of the Nei Jing and Nan Jing. This work
was the foundation of the teachings of G.Soulie de Morant who
introduced Acupuncture into Europe.

From the Qing Dynasty to the Opium Wars (1644-1840), herbal
medicine became the main tool of physicians and Acupuncture was
suppressed.

Following the Revolution of 1911, Western Medicine was introduced
and Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology were suppressed. Due to
the large population and need for medical care, Acupuncture and herbs
remained popular among the folk people, and the "barefoot doctor" emerged.
Acupuncture was used exclusively during the Long March (1934-35)
and despite harsh conditions it helped maintain the health of the army.

This led Mao ZeTong, the leader of the Communist Party, to see that
Acupuncture remained an important element in China's medical system.
In 1950 Chairman Mao officially united Traditional Chinese Medicine with
Western Medicine, and acupuncture became established in many hospitals.
In the same year Comrade Zhu De reinforced Traditional Chinese
Medicine with his book New Acupuncture.

In the late 1950's to the 1960's Acupuncture research continued
with - further study of the ancient texts, clinical effect on various diseases,
acupuncture anesthesia, and acupuncture's effect on the internal organs.
From the 1970's to the present, Acupuncture continues to play an
important role in China's medical system.

China has taken the lead inresearching all aspects of acupuncture's application and clinical effects. Although acupuncture has become modernized, it will never lose its
connection to a philosophy established thousands of years ago.

Homeopathic Therapeutic of Infertility

Homeopathic Therapeutic of Infertility - HTI P 2000By Prof Dr Nik Omar

The modern world offers a long list of conventional techniques - IUI, In-Vitro, Test Tube, GIFT, IVF, ICSI, AHT, TET, Surrogate Motherhood, etc. - to overcome infertility or sub-fertility. Despite that, many couples have yet to fulfill their dreams of bearing their own children.
Now, there's new hope for such couples. They can try the treatment developed by Prof Dr Sir Nik Omar, to achieve their wish for the bundle of joy. Using the Technique HTI-P2000 ® that Dr Nik Omar and friends have developed since 1975, more than 1000 couples worldwide have benefited from the results of his more-than-25 years of research.

Dr Nik Omar, DHMS (Lahore)., M.D.Hom., MRSH (London), MFHom (Kel)., FFHom (M'sia), Ph.D (India)., DBM (Pak)., Fbio-Chemic (Karachi)., D.Ac (kel)., M.Ac (M'sia)., M.AcF (Colombo)., M.Ac (Beijing)., M.Ac (Spain), is a well-recognised homeopathy and acupuncture practitioner in Malaysia, and a well-respected alternative medicine practitioner worldwide. He is also one of the pioneers of The Faculty of Homeopathy Malaysia.

Dr Nik Omar serves as committee member in numerous International Alternative/Complementary Medicine Workgroups, and has presented many papers in international conferences on Complementary Medicine. Currently, Dr Nik Omar serves as a consultant at Homeopathy and Acupuncture Centre in Kota Bharu and Kuala Lumpur, specialising in the treatment of infertility or sub-fertility using an alternative medicine technique, HTI-P2000 Dr Nik Omar.

HTI-P2000 is classified as an Integrated Medicine as it combines two alternative medicine techniques, homeopathy and acupuncture. Both are safe and free from side effects, especially since homeopathic medication are made from natural products, flora and fauna.

Homeopathy, developed by Prof Samuel Hahnemann from Germany, is a system of medicine based on the Law of Similars. Hahnemann described this principle by using a Latin phrase: Similia Similibus Curentur, which means: "Let likes cure likes." It is a principle that has been known for centuries, but Hahnemann has developed this principle into a system of medicine that has been used successfully for the last 200 years. Its continued and rising popularity is due largely to the proven effectiveness of its techniques.

Medical experts in the West are beginning to pay serious attention to these ancient systems of medicine. Countries such as United States of America, France, England, Belgium, Germany and now, Malaysia (in year 2000) have finally given alternative/complementary medicine, homeopathy and acupuncture in particular, their due recognition.

Newly Discovered Technique to Treat Infertility

Most laymen might not be aware of the benefits of using the HTI-P2000 ® Dr Nik Omar Technique to treat infertility. This technique basically overcomes the infertility or sub-fertility problem by letting the body heal itself, that is, through The Natural Way of Healing. Interestingly, alternative medicine practitioners in China has successfully used similar methods to treat infertility as far back as 11 AD.

HTI-P2000 not only helps couples to get babies, but it also improves the immune system, and re-balances the body's internal energy, known as 'qi' in Mandarin or in Homeopathic terminology, the 'Vital Force'.

When given suitable homeopathic remedies, and treated at exact acupuncture points, sub-fertility problems such as irregular menstruation, endometriosis, fibroid, high miscarriage probability, blocked fallopian tube, and PMS for ladies, or azoospermia, low sperm count and impotence for men can be corrected and overcome.

Qualified and Certified Practitioners
It must be emphasised that the HTI-P2000 Technique needs to be administered by a skilled homeopathic doctor, experienced in handling infertility cases, to ensure success. We can only guarantee that practitioners from 'Nik Omar Homeopathy Medical Centre', as listed below, are capable of handling infertility cases using HTI-P2000 effectively. Please refer to them for advise.

Coupled with Doa and Yakin, it is not impossible that a couple, married for 8 years or more, may finally get their bundle of joy - through the HTI-P2000 Technique - Allahu Akhbar !

High Tech Evidence On Acupuncture

High Tech Evidence
On Acupuncture, The Medicine for New World.
By Nik Fairuz Hakim, D.Ac, M.Ac

Although , almost all TCM Acupuncture techniques involve the insertion of sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, their will be certain variations in treatment, due to a practitioner’s style and training.

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve body functioning. This is done through the classical ways by inserting acupuncture needles and applying heat (moxibustion) or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points.

The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over it surface. These channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues, blood flow and nervous pulses. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that back up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it flows. Any obstruction and blockages or deficiencies of energy, blood and nervous pulses would eventually lead to disease.

There are still a large number of people who do not believe that acupuncture benefit the patients in treating various diseases. They are very sceptical about the curative power of TCM and acupuncture. They thinks that acupuncture only works due to psychological approach, because when we asked the Chinese Physician, how do TCM and acupuncture works ? They simply give a simple explanation, that their forefather have been practicing acupuncture for generations, and it works very well with the patients, and therefore it is very good treatment, but there is not enough scientific evidence to convince us.

Acupuncture Is A Mystery of The Past

Acupuncture and the other forms of traditional Chinese medicine have been around in the world for the last 4 to 5 thousand years. Yet the explanation for how acupuncture and Chinese medicine as a whole works has long been a mystery, if not an object of mockery, especially among the western trained doctors. The basic theory is outline in a text from 2000 years B.C. attributed to the Yellow Emperor ( a great Emperor of ancient China )

In belief , it recognizes in people and nature vital energy or life force known as ‘Qi’

Qi is the source of movements ranging from voluntary muscle action to blood flow, it protects the body from external influences, and it generates warm.

Qi flows through the body and to the organs by way of an extensive system of channels known as meridians. If the flow of the force is distributed, the theory goes, the resulting deficiency, excess, or stagnation of qi causes bodily malfunction and thus illness.

Acupuncture, in which needles are inserted into specific points along meridians and manipulated, is said to restore the proper flow of qi and thereby return the body to health.

In the early days, the number of acupuncture points is 365 according to days in one year.
But today Acupuncturist recognize some 1,500 acupuncture points, most of which have no obvious relationship to heir intended target. For example, a point on the first toe which is call ‘Taichong Liv 3’ is a wonderful acupoint for hypertension, while a point near the elbow ‘ Quici Li 11’ is considered as one of the best acupoint to enhance the immune system.
Unlike Western Medicine, which the doctor will prescribe various powerful drugs to overcome health problems, acupuncture need only one or two needles to stimulate the acupoint, sends the message to the brain and balance back the disturbances of vital energy and as a whole the patient will be treated naturally without any side effects.

Theory of Yin and Yang

Another integral concept is the tension between two ever present, complementary forces of nature, Yin and Yang. When their balance is distributed, the theory goes, people get sick.
Yin condition reflect a lack of qi ; pale face, cold extremities, slow pulse, keep alone, sad, moody, depression, etc
While Yang conditions result from an excess of qi ; read face, fever, fast pulse, very sensitive, aggressive, hypertension, maniac, agitation, etc

Many theories have been put forward to explain the pain relief theory by acupuncture.
Here are few research done on the effect of acupuncture throughout the world. Some of them are explain in detail below.

1) Neurological Theories.

i) Somato-Visceral Theory ( Felix Mann 1960, Ishikawa 1949, 1962 )
ii) Gate Control Theory ( Metzack and Wall, 1965)
iii) Multiple gate Comtrol ( Zhang Xiangtong, 1970, Man and Chan, 1972)
iv) Thalamic Intergration Theory ( Zhang Xiangtong, 1972 )
v) Thalamic Neuron Theory ( Tsun Nin Lee, 1977, 1978 )
vi) Cortical Inhibitory Surround Theory, Neo-Pavlovian, 1975)
vii) Motor gate Theory ( Jayasuriya and Fernando, 1977 )
viii) Autonomic Neuron Theory ( Ionescu-Tigovista, 1973 )

2) Defence Mechanism and Tissue Regeneration Theory
Cracuim 1973 and others

3) Bioelectrical Theories
i) Kirlian and Kirlian 1939
ii) Becker et al ( 1976 )

4) Embryological Theory ( Segmental Theory)
Felix Mann ( 1972 )

5) Humoral Theories ( Neurotrasmitter Theories )
i) 5-Hydroxytryotamine - Seratonin ( Zhang Xiangtong 1974, 76)
ii) Endorphin Release Theory ( Bruce Pomeranz, 1976)

6 ) Placebo Effect Theories
By many who do not understand acupuncture theory.

7) MRI High tech Evidance ( Zang Hee Choo, 1985 )

The Theory of Pain Relief Through Acupuncture

Few years back, while visiting his native country – Korea, Dr Zang Hee Choo ,62 years old professor from University of California, U.S.A, fell from a mountain trail and injured his spine. He recall, “ I fell down like a flight, like a big jump down the mountain. The next day I returned to United States and tried to stand up after on the plane. I count stand up. I said, oh oh ,it’s a big trouble.”

Eventually, Dr Choo hobbled off the plane and make his way home, and later he began to look for some relief from pain in his back. Relatives suggested he try acupuncture. Through he initially scoffed at the idea, as a medical officer, he says, he didn’t believe in acupuncture, but due to so much suffering, he tried it. And much to his surprise, it worked. “ After 10 minutes I felt the pain melting away.”

Choo’s unexpected relief prodded his professional curiosity. As a doctor who works in Radiology Department, Choo develops ways to image the complex inner working of the body, one of his inventions was prototype PET scanner around 1975. How he wondered, could inserting needles into seemingly random points on the body possibly affect human health ?
So he decided to take a closer look, and what he found astounded him. While sticking needles into few student volunteers, he took pictures of their brains and discovered that by stimulating an acupuncture point said to be associated with vision Tungtzuliao GB 1
He can see that the point trigger the activity in the very part of the brain that control vision. That just might be the reason that acupuncture works, he figured.

Research Effect of Acupoints With MRI

Dr Choo was again wondering of how, acupuncture claims that they can treats eye problems from acupoints of Zhiyin UB 67, Tonggu UB 66 , Shugu UB 65 and Kunlun UB 60 respectively. And almost all acupuncturist hold that stimulation of these acupoints with needles will effect the eyes via the system of meridian rather than through the central nervous system.

This acupoints are not found near the eyes, but on the outside of the foot, running from the little toe to the ankle

To test that claims. Dr Choo’s strapped student volunteers into an fMRI ( functional magnetic resonance imaging ) machine. While the standard MRI provides static cross-sectional pictures of structures in the body, functional MRI goes further to reveal how those structure are working. It measures minute changes in the amount of oxygen carried in the blood, which is presumably a rough measure of glucose uptake by various tissues and thus a good indicator of which tissues are active ; the result can be viewed as colorful FMRI brain activation maps.

Choo first stimulated the eyes of the volunteers through traditional means: he flashed a light in front of them. The resulting images, as expected, showed a concentration of color – an increase in activity – in the visual cortex, the portion of the brain that is known to be involved in eye function. Then Choo had an acupuncturist stimulate the acupuncture points of Zhiyin UB 67. In one person after another, the very same region of the brain – the visual cortex lit up on the fMRI image.

As odd as it seemed, sticking a needle into someone’s foot had the very same effect as shining a light in someone’s eyes. And this was not the generalized analgesic effect produced by the primitive limbic system, that was seen in the pain studies, this was a function – specific response occurring in the brain’s cortex, the area responsible for such sophisticated functions such as speech and hearing, memory and intellect.
More the magnitude of the brain activity seen on acupuncture stimulation was nearly as strong as that elicited by the flash of light.

“ It was very exciting,” recalls Choo. “I never thought anything would happen, but it’s very clear that stimulating the acupuncture point triggers activity in the visual cortex.” To eliminate the possibility of a placebo effect, Choo also stimulate a non acupoint, in the big toe. There was no response in the visual cortex.

Next Choo tried each form of stimulation over time, twisting the needle for a moment or flashing the light, resting and repeating. As before, the fMRI images were remarkably similar for acupuncture and for light stimulation. The time-course study was also done using the three other vision acupoints of the foot. The result was again consistent, except in the case of Tonggu UB 66, each acupoint lit up the visual cortex exactly as the light stimulation had done.

This time Choo noticed something else. When the activation date were graphed to show the intensity of the response over time, he saw that there were two distinct reactions among dozen volunteers. During the acupuncture phase, some showed an increase in activity, while the others showed a decrease. In other words, in some people, oxygen consumption in that brain region increased, while the others, it decreased.

“ I figured we must have made a mistake.” Says Choo, repeating the experiment, however, he saw the same results every time. “ Finally one of the acupuncturists mentioned. ‘Oh yes, it’s the respond of Yin and Yang ! ‘

Choo asked him which subjects were Yin and which were Yang, and without seeing the data, the practitioner correctly point out who had shown an increase in activity (Yang) and those who had a decrease (Yin ) in 11 of 12 cases. “ I don’t know how to explain it,” Cho says

Like many preliminary scientific reports, Choo’s small study raises more questions than answers. Still, he has demonstrated new functional effects of acupuncture. “Classically, acupuncture was the ultimate in experimentation, people collected data for thousands of years, “ say Joie Jones. Professor of Radiological Science, University of California. “ They noticed that when you applied a needle in one position, it would have an effect in another part of the body. But the connection through the brain was never made earlier.
With these studies, we’ve demonstrated that for at least some acupuncture points it goes through the brain.”

Yet even if it does go through the brain, how does stimulating a specific point on the foot trigger activity in the part of the brain that control vision ? There is no explanation for that either, says Choo, although he suspect that that the path is along the nervous system.
“ That endorphin are released by stimulating certain types of nerves in fibers anywhere in the body, that’s understood. But that there is specific connection between your toe and your visual system is really bizarre That’s really mind – boggling “ says Pomeranz.

Despite the absence of clear cut explanations, acupuncture’s clinical results are attracting interest from mainstream medicine especially allopathic doctors. A panel of independent experts convened last year by The American National Institute of Health concluded that acupuncture is indeed effective in treating nausea due to anesthesia and chemotherapy drugs. It is also helpful in treating post-surgical and other forms of pain. Moreover, the panel noted, despite the pervasive belief in the superior clinical effects of Western Drugs, plenty of conventional treatment for chronic pain shows that the success rate of acupuncture treatment is increasing day by day.

One of the more proactive acupuncture studies used SPECT ( single photon emission computed tomography ) to record images of the brains of the patients with chronic pain.

That study by Abbas Alavi, Chief of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, measured blood flow to the brain structures that are respected of releasing endorphins in response to acupuncture stimulus- the thalamus, hypothalamus, and brain stem. Comparing baseline images of people who were in pain with images taken after they received acupuncture treatment, Alavi found clear evidence of increased blood flow in the thalamus and the brain stem. He also found that treated patients felt less pain.

Like Choo, Alavi was not a believer in acupuncture or other form of Chinese medicine before doing this study. “ I thought acupuncture was more or less psychological , not an objective effect, “ he says, “I did study just for fun. I figured nothing would show up.

Gate Control Theory of Pain

According to this theory, stimulation of skin evoke nerve impulses that are trasmitted to the spinal cord system:-
i) The cells of the substantia gelatinosa (SG) in the dorsal horn, that act as a gate control system.
ii) The dorsal column fibers that project towards the brain and acting as a central control trigger which activates selective brain process that influence the modulating properties of the gate control system.
iii) The first central transmission (T) cells in the dorsal horn, that activate neutral mechanism which comprise the action system responsible for perception of pain.

The theory proposes that pain is determined by interaction among these three system.

Bruce Pomeraz's model suggests that endorphin / encephalin released from a neuron binds to opiate receptors on the terminal of an excitatory neuron, partially depolarizing the terminal membrane and reducing the net depolarization produced by the arrival of the nerve impulse. The amount of neurotransmitter released from the terminal is proportional to the net depolarization, so that the less excitatory transmitter is release. The receiving cell is then exposed to less excitatory stimulation and reduces its firing rate. The figure above shows how the endorphins suppress pain. Several research workers have confirmed this finding. Pomeranz ( Canada), Lars Terenius ( Sweden), Chapman and Mayer (US), Anton Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) and others are the leading workers on endorphins.
While Anton Jayasuriya and Wilfred Perera od Sri Lanka has shown that the endorphin mechanism can be activated with acupuncture to produce painless childbirth.

Acupuncture also has calming and tranquilizing effect. This is thought to be mediated by its action on the mid-brain reticular formation and certain other parts of the brain. Changes have been reported in chemistry of the brain tissue. For example dopamine content of the brain tissue increases after acupuncture. This dopaminergic effect may account for its effectiveness in conditions like parkinsonism where there is decrease in dopamine content of the brain.

In paralytic conditions, acupuncture treatment hastens motor recovery. Even the late cases of paralysis unresponsive to other form of therapy show improvement. This probably involve antidromic stimulation of the anterior horn cells and their reactivation through a biofeed back mechanism operating through the Renshaw and Gajal cells of the spinal cord or their cranial equivalents ( Motor Gate Theory, Jayasuriya and Fernando, 1977)

Immunity-improving Effect

Acupuncture enhance immune action trigger the body resistance to fight against the diseases are increased. This effect is mediated by a raise in leucocyte count, antibody titer and gamma-globulins. Acupuncture is therefore, is very useful in combating infections and it is more so when the prolonged antibiotic therapy is warranted or in cases of resistance or hypersensitivity to antibiotic. This action is again specific to certain acupuncture points.
Few acupuncture points such as Bahui, Hegu, Quichi are well known as having sedative effect. EEG taken during the treatment has shown a decrease in delta and theta wave activity. This effect is the basis of utilizing acupuncture for the treatment of anxiety states, nervous, restlessness, drug addicts, anti smoking, insomnia and other behavior disorders
It has been observed that a 20 to 30 minutes continuous manipulation of ' Taichong - Liv 3' of the toe alone reduces blood pressure from 200 / 110 mm Hg to 180 / 95 mm Hg which lasts for 3 to 4 days. Same thing happen to 'Sehencong - Extra 5' where the pain of migraine can stopped within few minutes of acupuncture treatment without any drugs or pain killer.

Second Research Done On Acupuncture Needling
Release of Endorphin and Monoamines,

Through our research with others colleague, we have been able to measure a flow of acupuncture – induced endorphin. According to neuro-scientist Bruce Pomeranz of the University of Toronto, Canada, numerous studies over the past 20 years have shown that inserting needles into acupoints stimulates nerves in the underlying primitive part of the brain, known as limbic system, as well as the midbrain and the pituitary gland. Somehow that signaling lead to the release of endorphins and monoamines, the two chemicals that block pain signals in the spinal cord and the brain. The result: A well-documented generalized acupuncture analgesia

“ The endorphin story is really nailed down”, says Pomeranz. “ It looks like it’s nerves to the brain. The acupoints that have been mapped over thousands of years are likely the spot where nerves are concentrated”. But the endorphin story “doesn’t explain many of the other claims of acupuncture, “ he continues. “There have been a number of clinical trials showing that acupuncture is extremely useful for the nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and early pregnancy. That’s not the endorphin system. Now body knows how that works.”
That is still the miracle mysteries behind acupuncture.

After studying the varied effects of acupuncture on the human psychologically and physiologically, the effective and scientific proven acupuncture treatments is no longer in doubt.
Acupuncture points have also been found to display the phenomena of bioluminescence when studies under high frequency radiation photography ( Kerlian and Kerlian, 1939 )

Thus there is a pile of theories explains the advantages of acupuncture treatments. In these days of advance nuclear technology , when the foolishness of acupuncture is proving wisdom and the amazing prescience of Huang Ti Emperor is obtaining every day new confirmation, what is there to prevent the most sceptical from, at least, experimenting with the power of 'qi' that has come to us through The South China sea.

This is the main reason why acupuncture has survived and spread as widely as it has. It is at present practiced in nearly every country of the world. It has cured millions of people. It has being alive for the last 5,000 years, because it is a simple, safe, effective and economical method of healing, naturally and friendly.
