Photographic Analysis

As discussed in my first article in the June issue, the effects of acupuncture are immediate after each session. Pictured below are infrared images (before and after acupuncture treatment) of a diabetic patient who had laser surgery on the eyes (without much success). The effect of acupuncture is dramatically illustrated by the change in the patient's color pattern. The color code is as follows: White is the highest temperature, followed by red; orange; yellow; green; blue; and black.

The patient was treated twice. The second treatment occurred about one week after the first.

Patient and first acupuncture treatment. The maximum temperatures around the eyes, forehead and the mouth were reduced by 1.32 C, 1.26 C and 1.0 C after the first treatment, respectively. Maximum temperatures around the eyes, forehead and the mouth were reduced by 0.65 C, 0.26 C and 0.46 C after the second treatment. The reduction in maximum temperatures was less for the second treatment than for the first treatment.

Before the first treatment, the differences between maximum and minimum temperature around the eyes, mouth and forehead were 2.65 C, -0.07 C and 1.49 C. Before the second treatment, the differences between maximum and minimum temperatures were 1.81 C, 0.06 C and 0.27 C.

We detected improvement on the eyes and the forehead based on the reductions of their difference in maximum and minimum temperature. We attributed the improvement of 0.64 C around the eyes and 1.22 C around the forehead to the first treatment with acupuncture and massage. There was hardly any change to the difference of maximum and minimum temperature around the mouth.

The high temperature around the forehead probably was due to high blood pressure. Since the improvement was rapid, one expects the high blood pressure can be controlled much easier.

The high temperature around the eyes was due to damage from diabetes and the surgical operations on the eyes. Nevertheless, there was an improvement of 0.64 C. This is a very good indication that the patient responded positively to acupuncture treatment.

For another serious diabetic patient who had acupuncture continuously twice a week for a year, there was continuous improvement of eyesight and bodily function.

Acupuncture may help improve enlarged prostate
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Acupuncture may help improve conditions for those with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate glands, and could stand in as an alternative to traditional drug or surgical treatments, local media reported yesterday.

Yiu Rong-sheng, a physician with the Chinese Medical Department at Chi Mei Medical Center, explained that senile BPH is nowadays a common affliction as a result of westernized diets, and that acupuncture may be effective for mild to moderate cases by improving blood and energy flow to the prostate region.

Statistics have shown that an estimated 75 percent of men over 50 years have BPH, with 50 percent showing symptoms, and that 70 percent of males experience difficulty urinating by age 70.

According to local studies, acupuncture could relieve the discomfort that comes with urinary problems through stimulating specific points on the body, Yiu said.

He added that the fine needle treatment would help regulate functions of the prostate, bladder and urethra in order to help relax the urethral sphincter and smooth muscles of the prostate as well as to increase the distensibility of the bladder.

Applying pressure on acupoints like Guanyuan around the lower stomach and Sanyinjiao, Zusanli and Taichong on the feet would alleviate BPH symptoms, said the doctor.

Yiu has been leading an ongoing study to evaluate the effectiveness of the needle technique on relieving symptoms of enlarged prostate glands, such as urinary hesitancy, frequent or painful urination.

Of the 20 patients involved with the research, most have shown improvement after treatment, but the extent to which the therapeutic procedure has helped each individual varies, Yiu said.

Can Pancreatitis Be Cured ?

In December 2006 the patient had a pancreatic attack which resulted in a hospital stay of four days and required the use of morphine for pain. He had been suffering with pancreatitis for two years. He blames this condition on the fact that he ate poorly during this time, mostly fast food with lots of fat and sugar. In a two-year period, he suffered four pancreatic attacks and two of these attacks resulted in hospital stays. His doctors ordered a blood test to see if amylase and lipase were elevated. They then confirmed he had pancreatitis by doing a CT scan.

In early 2007, endoscopic ultrasound imaging showed that the “head of the pancreas was enlarged and very heterogeneous with irregular gland borders, lobularity, hyperechoic and foci. These changes were also clearly identified in the neck, body and tail but were not as severe. The pancreatic duct was hyperechoic and irregular in the neck and body. The pancreas appeared diffusely swollen compared to the last examination. There were new calcifications in the head parenchyma. There was also a 7mm stone inside the main pancreatic duct (level of the head) before the bifurcation.” After he recovered from this attack, the patient adjusted his diet and sought massage therapy.

How Chinese Medicine views Chronic Pancreatitis

This condition is discussed under abdominal pain and diarrhea in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).1 The pathogenesis is damp-heat phlegm statis obstructing the middle Jiao. In Western medicine, it is seen as chronic inflammation of the pancreas. Cholelithiasis and infection of the biliary tract causing reverse flow of the bile or a narrowed pancreatic duct can cause repeated attacks of pancreatitis. These are the most common causes of pancreatitis.

If not successfully treated, this condition can lead to diabetes and/or pancreatic cancer. TCM focuses on strengthening the spleen, transporting dampness, invigorating blood, and clearing heat, which can control the symptoms such as diarrhea, fatty diarrhea, emaciation, malnutrition, and abdominal distending pain. In the patient’s case, it was determined he suffered from spleen deficiency with dampness syndrome. The treatment principle determined was to strengthen the spleen and transform dampness.

What does it feel like?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway of ligament and bones at the base of your hand. It contains nerve and tendons. Can Homeopathy / Altenative Medicine Treat Hepatitis B ?

Greetings from Auckland, New Zealand.

I'm writing with you in regard to my grave concern about Hepatitis B. I was diagnosed with one back in 2001/2002 when I donated my blood during the donation drive done in my university. Few weeks after that, I got a letter from National Blood Centre to report myself to them. Then the doctor told me I was and still am a Hepatitis B carrier. How I got it, it's still a mystery. Probably I didn't get a proper when I was kid as I was an adopted child.

Fast forward, so far I have no problem with my health. No major sickness. However when I did my medical report (as per attachment) for my residency application in New Zealand, the medical assessor of Immigration New Zealand has noted:


* Hepatitis B with abnormal liver function.
* Recommended treatment Pegylated interferon. Cost $35,000 - $40,000/year.
* Entecavir remains unsubsidized.
* Lamivudine is subsidized $143/month but sustained seroconversion is unlikely. The majority of those who start lamivudine develop resistance within 4-5 years and the present medication used in that case is adefovir $670/month. Treatment - long term.
* Pegylated interferon has significant side effect which may interfere with ability to maintain employment.

Due to the medical cost impose to me and New Zealand government, I'm very reluctant to the recommended treatment. Also I'm worried about the side effect of taking any of those drugs. The medical assessor also noted Pegylated interferon has significant side effect which may interfere with ability to maintain employment and this is the main reason I personally prefer to seek alternative treatment.

Therefore, it will be great if you could have a look at my medical report- blood test and recommend/ prescribe a treatment for me and quote me the cost of treatment and how long it takes.
