Acupuncture Study Brings Hope For Parkinson'sDisease Patients

Forpeople living with Parkinson's disease, the future is full of obstacles anduncertainty.

Thisis the sole reason the second most prevalent neuro-degenerative disease thataffects about 1 million people in the U.S., and 5 million worldwide hasresearchers constantly on the hunt for not only a cure, but also a way toimprove the quality of life for patients.

Bythe year 2013, a current research study involving acupuncture is hoping to findanswers for Parkinson's disease patients living with one of the mostdebilitating side effects – fatigue.

The research study funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson'sResearch is currently determining whether alternative Eastern medicine,specifically acupuncture, can help alleviate symptoms of severe fatigue inthose living with Parkinson's.

Thefoundation, which was established in 2000 by actor Michael J. Fox, is thelargest funder of Parkinson's research in the world. The organization hasfunded over $270 million in targeted Parkinson's research to date including thelatest study on acupuncture.

Dr.Benzi Kluger, assistant professor of neurology and psychiatry at the Universityof Colorado Hospital has been leading the study, which began in November 2010.The study is being conducted as a double-blind study to find whetheracupuncture has a significant effect on Parkinson's patients living withfatigue in their daily lives.

"Westernmedicine does not have good treatment for fatigue," said Kluger."Fatigue for patients with Parkinson's is really different, it doesn'timprove with rest and is very disabling."

Fatigueaffects approximately half of all Parkinson's disease patients. Many of them donot get relief from medication and research has now focused on ancient Eastern medicinesuch as acupuncture to find answers, said Kluger.

"Wewanted to see if we can come up with alternative strategies that can also laterhelp people with other neurological disorders in the future," said Kluger.

Klugerapproached the Parkinson's foundation with his study because he said he wasinterested in non-motor systems in Parkinson's patients. Non-motor symptoms arethe most common symptoms that develop first in patients and one of them isfatigue.

JamieEberling, associate director of research programs at the Michael J. FoxFoundation for Parkinson's Research said Kluger's study was chosen based on itsmerits and because it was something of interest to their donor base.

"Weare always interested in different types of approaches," said Eberling."We are always open to new things, we wish we could see more of thesetypes of studies being presented."

Thefoundation in the past has funded studies on exercise and even singing forspeech problems as well as dancing for motor impairment in Parkinson's diseasepatients. They review 800 grant proposals a year and are currently supportingmore than 300 research projects in industry, academia and government.

Kluger'sacupuncture study has a total of 22 patients participating right now. The goalis to have 90-100 patients by the study's end date in 2013.

Patientswho joined the study initially came in for a screening visit and filled out aquestionnaire about fatigue and their beliefs about acupuncture and alternativemedicine. Once people were screened into the study, they were randomized withtwice weekly sham or real acupuncture.

Patientsin the study are blindfolded while they are receiving acupuncture treatment andKluger said he doesn't know which patients are receiving acupuncture treatmentand which patients are receiving placebo.

Threeacupuncturists have been working on the study subjects placing needles inacupuncture points on the patient's face and back. For patients who are in theplacebo group, the acupuncturists may place non-penetrating needles in spotsthat aren't typical acupuncture spots.

Klugersaid in the spring, his team is going to try to shell out a paper on the shamacupuncture after spending a lot of time learning how to remove the sham needlesto create a really good placebo procedure.

Sofar, Kluger said he has seen dramatic improvement in fatigue in some of thestudy subjects. "People have gone back to doing activities that theyhaven't done in years," he said. Since the statistical data is not yetcompleted, Kluger said he wouldn't know which group has benefitted the most.

Klugernoted that a large majority of Parkinson's disease patients already use a formof alternative medicine – acupuncture, massage, herbs and chiropractic care,but until now, there weren't many evidence-based studies to determine whetheracupuncture is effective for symptoms such as fatigue.

Theneuro-degenerative disease affects between 1 percent and 2 percent of peopleover the age of 65. Those diagnosed with the disease will lose neurons inspecific parts of the brain, affecting muscle movement and control over time.

Klugersaid if he finds that acupuncture can be used as an alternative form ofmedicine to alleviate the symptoms of severe fatigue, it might help insurancecompanies extend their coverage of the treatment.

"Wewill also be able to see if acupuncture would be effective for people withother diseases like cancer and MS (Multiple Sclerosis)," Kluger said.

Focusingmost of his medical career in Western medicine, Kluger said he has reallyenjoyed doing research on Eastern medicine and finding out about the potentialit has to heal people.

"Forme it has been a wonderful opportunity to work with acupuncturists to reallystart to delve into acupuncture. One of my goals is to come out of it with anopen mind," he said. "It's been really fun to explore alternativeways to help these patients. We are hopeful."

The 15 trials showed that patients getting acupuncture before or during varioustypes of
operations had significantly less pain afterward than patients who did not getacupuncture.
These patients also required less morphine or other opioid pain medicationafter surgery, which reduced the side effects like nausea and vomiting fromthese types of drugs, the researchers said.

In terms of pain-drug side effects, the acupuncture patients experienced 1.5times lower rates of nausea, 1.6 times fewer reports of dizziness and 3.5 timesfewer cases of urinary retention compared to the other patients, the studyfound.

These findings augment a growing body of evidence on the value of acupuncturein improving the surgical experience for patients, the researchers said.

Sandra Kean suffers from migraines as well as severe abdominal pain as a result of a condition called ulcerative colitis. In addition to having surgery, she comes to Children's Hospital Boston for regular acupuncture treatments to help relieve her pain. "I would be doubled over, uncomfortable and crying, and then after I went to acupuncture, I was more relaxed and calm and the side effects were basically gone."

"After a week or two, we weren't getting any more complaining about her abdominal pain or her back pain," said Sandra's mother Roseanne.

Children's started offering patients acupuncture as a complementary therapy in 2000.

"Lots of kids will be saying to us, 'I don't want needles,' however; after careful explanation and demonstration, kids to very well with acupuncture," said Dr. Yuan-Chi Lin of Children's Hospital Boston.

Doctors have used acupuncture to help hundreds of patients, ranging from teenagers like Sandra to the tiniest of babies."I have done acupuncture for premature infants to decrease their anxiety when they are in the intensive care unit," said Dr. Lin.

Dr. Lin has conducted studies which have shown that children who suffered from headaches, stomach aches and other chronic pain, felt less pain, missed less school and were able to sleep better after receiving acupuncture treatments for a year.

Acupuncture, among the oldest healing practices in the world, is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture practitioners stimulate specific points on the body—most often by inserting thin needles through the skin. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, this regulates the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians.
According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, 1.4 percent of respondents (an estimated 3.1 million Americans) said they had used acupuncture in the past year. A special analysis of acupuncture data from an earlier NHIS found that pain or musculoskeletal complaints accounted for 7 of the top 10 conditions for which people use acupuncture. Back pain was the most common, followed by joint pain, neck pain, severe headache/migraine, and recurring pain.

What the Science Says About Acupuncture for Pain

Acupuncture has been studied for a wide range of pain conditions, such as postoperative dental pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, low-back pain, menstrual cramps, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, and tennis elbow.

Overall, it can be very difficult to compare acupuncture research results from study to study and to draw conclusions from the cumulative body of evidence. This is because studies may use different acupuncture techniques (e.g., electrical vs. manual), controls (comparison groups), and outcome measures.
One particularly complex factor in acupuncture research is choosing the controls for a clinical trial.

The choice depends in part on whether the researchers want to study a particular aspect of acupuncture (e.g., effects on the brain) or to determine whether acupuncture is useful compared with other forms of care. Examples of control groups include study participants who receive no acupuncture, simulated acupuncture (procedures that mimic acupuncture, sometimes also referred to as "placebo" or "sham"), or other treatments (in addition to or in place of acupuncture or simulated acupuncture).

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — For the first time, doctors are testing acupuncture to treat injured troops in transit from Ramstein to the States.
The servicemembers are part of a study, looking at whether battlefield acupuncture — a procedure that involves placing tiny needles into troops’ ears — can be effectively used to control pain during an air evacuation.
Air Force Dr. (Col.) Richard Niemtzow, who developed the technique in 2001, said the needles would not replace painkillers during the flight, which lasts about seven hours. But he hopes the study will show that the acupuncture allows injured troops to take reduced doses of narcotics during the long flight to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
“We are approaching this in a safe and scientific manner. These people are not being taken advantage of because they are hurting,” he said. “We’re hoping that there is a benefit, but it may show that it is not useful.”
On a combat evacuation, where even the rattle of a flight can make broken bones much more painful, morphine and other opiate painkillers are typically given to injured troops. And as more troops return from the battlefield with pain, the military has seen a spike in the number of prescriptions for opiate painkillers. More troubling, abuse of painkillers is on the rise: About 22 percent of soldiers admitted misusing prescribed drugs, mostly painkillers, in a 12-month period, according to the results of a Pentagon survey released last year.
As a way to reduce the number of painkillers given to servicemembers, the military has turned to acupuncture as a potential alternative, using it to reduce long-term pain in veterans, as well as using Niemtzow’s technique to ease troops’ aches and strains downrange since 2009.
For this study, volunteers will be solicited prior to the evacuation. They will then be asked to fill out surveys about their pain symptoms before and during the flight

Joan Walter, president of military medical research for the Samueli Institute in Alexandria, Va., said she expects to have about 60 to 70 participants during the 90-day study, which is being funded by the Air Force. Injuries to the servicemembers will likely include headaches, chronic muscular and skeletal pain, and broken limbs from roadside bomb attacks or motor vehicle accidents.

Niemtzow and his colleagues stressed that this study is not meant to prove acupuncture’s efficacy, something that is still debated among researchers and doctors, despite its 5,000-year history. The study is simply trying to determine whether troops feel that acupuncture is a benefit to them on the flight, as well as whether medical personnel can perform the procedure easily during an evacuation.
“We are asking in the environment of an aeromedical evacuation: Does this show promise?” he said. “Can this can be substituted in place of habit-forming medication or other medications with side effects? It’s a feasibility study.”
Small enough that they can be worn beneath headphones or a helmet, the needles are inserted into any of five points in the ear. Niemtzow hypothesizes that the ear acts as an intermediary when pain signals pass from the central nervous system to the brain, and those signals can be intercepted and manipulated by the needles to stop or lessen pain.
“We think that the insertion of the needles into the ear turns off the pain signal,” he said. “They still have the pathological condition, but there is a reduction in the perception of pain.”
At Ramstein’s Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility, Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Friedbauer signed up to be one of the first servicemembers in the study. Army Lt. Col. Nancy Steele, head of nursing research for European Regional Medical Command, pricked his ears with several needles: some gold, others silver and platinum.
“I never thought I would go for earrings,” he said.
Friedbauer, of the Army National Guard’s 20th Special Forces Group, had been directing traffic at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan when a forklift, carrying 2,200 gallons of diesel fuel, slammed into his back — tearing his shoulder. Doctors said he would need to have rotator cuff surgery immediately, and he was now awaiting a flight home.
Minutes after being stuck with needles, Friedbauer raised his right arm.
“I was very skeptical,” he said. “But I can’t believe the difference. My shoulder and back feel better, and I have more movement in my arm.”
Another patient, Army Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Smith, of the 47th Ordnance Company, said his back pain, which made him wince every time he bent over, had greatly diminished after the acupuncture.

According to a new study, women who suffer from hot flashes and other uncomfortable symptoms of menopause may be able to find relief through acupuncture. These symptoms plague menopausal women and usual therapy for it is hormone replacement therapy but that has its own problems including an increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and breast cancer.

Turkish researchers recruited 53 postmenopausal women and assigned 27 of them to a five-week course of acupuncture (twice a week for 20 minutes at a time) and 26 of them got sham treatments that they thought were real. The real acupuncture group got pierced with the needles at 10 acupuncture points while the sham group got poked with blunted needles that did not penetrate the skin.

Results showed that at the end of the study period, the women who got acupuncture showed more relief from their symptoms compared to their counterparts who got the fake treatment. Their hot flashes were less severe (there was no change for women who got the sham treatment). Both groups had improvements in their psychological symptoms (as measured by the Menopause Rating Scale), though the benefit was much greater for women who got acupuncture.

n addition, estrogen levels were significantly higher for the women in the treatment group compared to the controls. There were no differences between the two groups in terms of vaginal dryness and urinary tract infection. Had there been more than 10 sessions, the benefits of acupuncture might have been even greater, the researchers said. Coping with Pain through Acupuncture

Another study, presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, confirmed the beneficial impact of acupuncture on reducing pain. Researchers in Germany utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare 18 individuals, who agreed to take part in the study, to determine how the brain processes pain with and without acupuncture.

During the fMRI sessions, scientists captured pictures of the brain while patients were exposed to an external pain stimulus. The interesting part? The obtained data revealed that significantly reduced was not only the pain perception, but the patient's expectation of pain, too.

"Activation of brain areas involved in pain perception was significantly reduced or modulated under acupuncture," explained Dr. Nina Theysohn, who led the research at University Hospital in Essen. MONDAY, Dec. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Acupuncture may help relieve nerve pain caused by some cancer drugs, according to a new study.Cancer drugs called taxanes, vinca alkaloids and platinum compounds can damage peripheral nerves, especially in the calves and feet, resulting in severe nerve pain or difficulty walking.

Currently, there is no effective treatment for the condition, called chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy.This small, preliminary study included six patients with peripheral neuropathy who underwent acupuncture and five patients with peripheral neuropathy who served as a comparison group.

The acupuncture treatment involved insertion of 20 needles at specific points and depths, which were left in place for 20 minutes during each of the 10 sessions delivered by a doctor over a period of three months.Tests of the signaling speed and intensity of two nerves in the same calf were conducted before acupuncture and again six months after chemotherapy.

The same tests were carried out on patients who did not receive acupuncture.The researchers found that both the speed and intensity of nerve signaling improved in five of the six patients who had acupuncture, and the five patients also said that their condition had improved.Among patients in the comparison group, nerve speed stayed the same in three, improved in one and decreased in one. Nerve intensity improved in two, decreased in two, and stayed the same in one.

Identification
Acupuncture works by the insertion of needles in certain points of the body. This can help the body to release endorphins, which aid the body in stress relief, which is a known trigger for overeating and binge eating. Acupuncture also helps to balance the digestive system and helps to regulate metabolism.

Treatment
The acupuncturist will choose the points to insert the needles. This is done by consulting with you and discussing your eating habits and the reasons that you overeat. Any other digestive conditions or health concerns will also be addressed at this time.

The content of this guideline was based on epidemiological and

other research evidence available in international literature and

guidelines, supplemented where necessary by the consensus

opinion of the Dean of Research Institute of Malaysian

Acupuncture , Prof. Dr. Nik Omer.

Introduction

Acupuncture has been embraced as one of the treatment modalities within the scope of
Physiotherapy practice. In response to the increasing demand on acupuncture by
patients, acupuncture has been incorporated as one of the therapeutic interventions of physiotherapists. Thorough Physiotherapy Assessment, a procedure by which
collection of relevant information and quantified data is conducted prior to
treatment. Treatment modalities including acupuncture, and other physiotherapy
equipment resolving the clinical problems, are explained and implemented to
the patient. Parameters of acupuncture are selected based on assessment protocols
and knowledge of human anatomy, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology in pain and
motor control and related information on physiology and pathology of the conditions
treated.

All physiotherapists practicing acupuncture have to abide strictly the work instruction set by the department of Physiotherapy.

Standards of Practice of Acupuncture by
Physiotherapists

All Physiotherapists who practice acupuncture should:-

1. Have successfully completed a training program in acupuncture.

2. Apply acupuncture as one of the treatment modalities of the physiotherapy
profession.

3. Maintain a standard of documentation by using SOAP method.

4. Comply with standards of infection control procedures as recommended.

Formulation of Acupuncture Treatment Plan

A. Assessment
1. Subjective and objective information from patients.
2. Area and type of acupuncture intervention are identified and discussed with
patient/ family.

B. Intervention Plan
1. Goal for acupuncture intervention should be set.
2. Problems, goals and intervention program (including acupuncture and other
appropriate Physiotherapy modalities) should be discussed with patients.
3. Contra-indications and precautions for acupuncture and all intervention
should be discussed.
4. Verbal consent for acupuncture treatment must be obtained from patients.
5. Intervention plan and time frame of therapy are designed.

C. Implementation of Acupuncture Treatment
1. All safety precautions are taken and use only disposable needle.
2. Warning regarding inappropriate responses should be given to patients.
3. Hygiene and sterilization procedures for both patients and therapists are followed.
4. Standards of waste disposal and handling of blood and body fluid are followed.
5. On going reassessments are needed and appropriate changes will be made
if so required.
6. Records describing acupuncture points, penetration depth, angle of insertion,
and treatment dosage are documented.

Contra-indications and Precautions of Acupuncture

A good knowledge of anatomy is essential in order to avoid structural damages
such as nerves, organs or arteries.

A. Prohibited Areas for Needling

The following areas should be avoided at all times.
1. Scalp area of infants before the fontanelle has closed
2. Nipples and breast tissues
3. Umbilicus
4. External genitalia
5. Eye balls

B. General Precautions

1. Patients with uncontrolled movement are not suitable for acupuncture.
2. Patients allergic to metals may not be suitable for acupuncture without medical clearance.

C. Special Precautions

1. Dangerous or vulnerable points which may lead to damage - Certain useful points which are potentially dangerous and therefore require special attention in their use.

For example, these apply to:

a. Orbit of eye.

b. Certain neck points.

c. Points over lung tissues unprotected by bone or cartilage.

d. Points near arteries.

e. Point over gallbladder .

f. Liv 3 (Taichong ), hypertensive patients may suffer from a rapid drop of BP

g. Ah Shi points close to vulnerable structures

i. Avoid needling certain pathological sites e.g. varicose veins;
inflammatory areas; malignant tumours; areas of unhealthy skin

j. Avoid needling deep and perpendicularly on points of the chest, hypochondria and spine.

2. Pregnant patients-Avoid acupuncture in the first trimester of pregnancy as needling may cause a “miscarriage”, or in the last 3 months as it may cause premature labour. Also to avoid points that are considered especially likely to
disturb a pregnancy. e.g.

a. LI 4 (Hegu)
SP 6 (Sanyinjiao)
K 3 ( Taixi )
b. points over lower abdomen
c. ear points related to endocrine and genito-urinary system d. scalp points for genital and motor sensory areas
e. strong electro-stimulation to acupuncture points.

3. Diabetics patients- Care should be taken when needling diabetic patients because
of the danger of poor peripheral circulation and the effect of some points on
blood sugar level.

4. Frail Patients- Patients with a weak constitution after prolonged chronic illness may
tolerate acupuncture poorly. Strong manipulation is not recommended.

5. Active/Powered-Implant Patients- Patients with active/powered implants such as :
cardiac pacemakers and neurostimulators should not be given electro-acupuncture.

6. Confused Patients- Great care must be taken with patients who are unable to
understand the acupuncture procedure.

7. Children- Parental consent must be obtained for treatment of children.

8. Bleeding disorders:-
a. naturally occurring haemorrhagic diseases like haemophilia.
b. drug-induced bleeding, like warfarin
c. apply pressure on each point on removing needles

9. When Sensation of acupuncture cannot be obtained at a conservative needle depth,
let the needle rest and allow Sensation of acupuncture to come to the needle
over time.

10. Acupuncture should not be inserted in a limb with lymphoedematous swelling.
Broken skin is a source of potential infection and cellulitis, and the patient could
continue to ooze fluid from the sites of needle insertion.

Warnings Given to Patients Prior to Acupuncture
Treatment

1. In the process of acupuncture treatment, there may be a very mild pain/
discomfort during insertion of needles.
2. The normal sensation during the retention of needles is soreness, heaviness /

fullness, local/ radiating paraesthesia and/ or warmth.

3. Do not move or contract muscles over the treatment areas.

4. Do not fall asleep.

Acupuncture Infection Control Procedure

A. Practitioner Preparation

1. Practitioners should wash hands with liquid soap/ disinfected solution and
thoroughly pat dry hands before and after acupuncture application to patients.

2. Any cut/breaks in skin should be covered with water-proof dressing or sterile
disposable glove worn.

B. Patients’ skin preparation

For patients with normal immune system

1. The patient’s skin should be clean and free from cut, wound and infection.

2. The patients’ skin should be inspected for dirt and grease.

3. The needling site must be disinfected prior to acupuncture using disinfectant such
as 70-80% ethanol.

C. Needle Insertion

1. Sterile, single-use, disposable acupuncture needles with guide-tubes are recommended.

2. Ensure the portion of the needle to penetrate the skin does not come into contact with the bare fingers of the practitioner, or any non-sterile surface.

3. The number of needles inserted must be documented

D. Needle Manipulation

1. Manipulate needle using the handle of the needle. Avoid touching the shaft of the needle.

2. In the case of long needles, a sterile glove may be used to grasp the top of the needle shafts for insertion and/or manipulation.

E. Needle Removal

1. Withdraw needle by grasping needle handle, using a sterile, dry swab/cotton wool ball to apply pressure to the insertion point to prevent bleeding.

F. Handling of Blood and Body Fluid

1. Care must be taken to avoid contact with patients’ blood and body fluid.
Should bleeding occur, a dry cotton wool ball should be used to absorb it. The used cotton wool ball should be put into an appropriate bin.

Patient Information for Acupuncture

1. Please inform your physiotherapist if you have any of the following conditions:

pregnancy

on Warfarin or other similar medications

haemophilia

diabetes mellitus

hypertension

epilepsy

pulmonary tuberculosis

hepatitis

infectious diseases

cardiac pacemaker

deep brain stimulator

other electronic implants

2. Please keep the body parts for treatment clean and free of any ointment before acupuncture.

3. Avoid being hungry, thirsty and unduly tired before acupuncture.

4. Avoid wearing tight outfits and metal accessories over the body parts for acupuncture.

5. During acupuncture, please relaxed and do not change position or move.

6. Please empty your bladder before acupuncture. This is especially important if acupuncture is applied to the lower abdominal region.

7. Do not touch the needles or other acupuncture equipment.

8. Do not fall asleep during acupuncture.

9. During acupuncture, you may have one or more of the following sensations: soreness, heaviness, fullness, local or radiating paraesthesia, and warmth. These sensations are normal. Such sensations may last for a period of time after treatment.

10. After acupuncture, there may be mild bruising over the treatment area, it will subside gradually.

11. If you have any discomfort during acupuncture, please inform your physiotherapist immediately by pressing the emergency bell given.

12. Please consult your physiotherapist for any queries.

HANOI — Fifty-year-old Tran Thi Dang credits acupuncture with helping her lose weight.

Dang, 165cm tall, weighed 65kg before the treatment. In just one month of acupuncture she lost 3kg, she said.
Dang plans to reach 60kg and be able to maintain that weight by the time her daughter returns to school in September.
Her daughter Nguyen Thuy Quynh is 18 years old and weighs 80kg. She hopes the treatment will help her lose weight too.

Many overweight people have turned to acupuncture to lose weight in Viet Nam in recent years. However, health specialists warn that people should not expect miraculous results from the treatment.

Dr Dao Huu Minh at the Central Traditional Medicine Hospital said that not everybody who seeks help with weight loss is necessarily a good candidate for acupuncture.
Obese people who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, and liver and kidney disease, must be treated for these diseases as well.
The treatment only works for people whose weight-to-height ratio is more than 25, according to Dr Minh.

The treatment lasts 12 weeks, with consultations every second day.
Patients should lose 1kg in the first week, and 2kg in every subsequent three weeks of treatment, Dr Minh said.

Dr Nguyen Viet Thai, head of consultations, said acupuncture accelerated weight loss.
Dr Minh said the treatment could also be used on obese children.
Inserting an acupuncture needle into a particular spot on the ear would allow the needle to be manipulated by the patient to relieve the sensation of hunger when needed.

The doctor said this worked best for children, because the needle only needed to be changed once a week.
Both Dr Minh and Dr Thai agreed that to maintain their new weight, people would have to change their diet over the long term.

Acupuncture was purely a way to help the body adjust to the change, they said.
Dr Minh also said that while some medicines and fad diet would help people lose weight in the short-term, they were not a permanent solution because people would quickly regain weight if they could not overcome their cravings for food in the long term. —VNS

50 Cases With Children Cortex Blindness Due to Toxic Treated With Acupuncture

50 Cases of children blindness due to toxic were treated by acupuncture on Neijingming as main point, the second point were fengchi and Guangming, Hegu and Taichong. The two group can be used alternately.

The method

Ask the children to open the eyes and needle of number 30 can be inserted directly into 0.5 to 1 cun without lifting and twisting.
The second point should be done with even movement method for 30 minutes.

After 6 - 24 times of treatment all the cases were cured.

Dua for Anxiety and Stress

They are a means of dispelling fear, of seeking forgiveness of Allah, seeking His aid, protection and guidance. They are the words of the Messenger of Allah (sall’allahu alayhi wasallam) and hence anyone that sincerely makes these dua during times of great need Allah will always answer the dua of the sinere seeker. May they be of benefit to us all for there is not a time in the life of a believer when he or she does not need the protection, guidance and mercy of Allah.

And those that turn to Allah sincerely imploring His aid should know that in reality it is Allah turning to His servant, for, “When Allah wants to be good to someone, He tries him with some hardship.” (Abu Hurairah)
General advice from Prophet Muhammad (sall’allahu alayhi wasallam) when you are in distress or suffering from anxiety:

In hadith #599 narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas in Sunan Abu Dawood, The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he did not reckon.

Abu Bakrah reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “The supplications of distress are, ‘Allahumma rahmataka arju, fala takilni ila nafsi tarfata ‘ain, wa aslah li sha’ni kullahu, la ilaha illa anta (O Allah, I hope for Your mercy, so give me not over to my self even for as little as wink of an eye, and set right all my affairs, there is no god but You).”

5. Asma, daughter of ‘Amais, reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, asked her, “Shall I tell you words that you may say in times of pain or distress. These are, ‘Allah, Allah, Rabbi la ushriku bihi shai’an (Allah, Allah, my Lord, I associate none with Him).” Another narration says that these words should be said seven times.

6. Sa’d ibn Waqas reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “The supplication made by the Companion of the Fish (Prophet Yunus) in the belly of the fish was, ‘La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minadh-dhalimin (there is no god but You, You are far exalted and above all weaknesses, and I was indeed the wrongdoer)’. If any Muslim supplicates in these words, his supplication will be accepted.”

In another report we read, “I know words that will cause Allah to remove one’s distress. These are the words (of supplication) of my brother Yunus, peace be upon him.”

Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “If any servant of Allah afflicted with distress or grief makes this supplication, his supplication will be accepted: ‘O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of your maidservant. My forehead is in Your hand. Your command conceming me prevails, and Your decision concerning me is just. I call upon You by every one of the beautiful names by which You have described Yourself, or which You have revealed in Your book, or have taught anyone of Your creatures, or which You have chosen to keep in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur’an the delight of my heart, the light of my breast, and remover of my griefs, sorrows, and afflictions‘.” A supplication in these words will be answered. Allah will remove one’s affliction and replace it with joy and happiness.

8. Anas reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to supplicate, “O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and you alone can turn a difficulty into ease.” (Ibn As-sinni)

9. Allah’s Apostle used to say at the time of difficulty, “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Majestic, the Most Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Lord of the Tremendous Throne. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Honourable Throne.”

Abu Hurairah narrates that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “When Allah wants to be good to someone, He tries him with some hardship.”

Abu Hurairah also reports that Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him, said: “For every misfortune, illness, anxiety, grief, or hurt that afflicts a Muslim, even the hurt caused by the pricking of a thorn – Allah removes some of his sins.”

Ibn Mas’ud said: “I visited the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, while he had a fever. I exclaimed: ‘O Messenger of Allah! You have a high fever! ‘ He said: ‘My fever is as much as two among you [might have]. ‘ I asked: ‘Is it because you have a double reward?’ He replied: ‘Yes, that is right. No Muslim is afflicted with any hurt, even if it is no more than the pricking of a thorn, but Allah wipes off his sins because of it and his sins fall away from him as leaves fall from a tree‘.”

Abu Hurairah (r) said: “The Prophet, peace be upon him, remarked: ‘The example of a believer is like a fresh tender plant; from whichever direction the wind blows, it bends the plant. But when the wind dies down, it straightens up again. (Similarly a believer is tested by afflictions to strengthen his faith and heart, and he remains patient and firm). And an evil person is like a pine tree which remains hard and stiff until Allah breaks it whenever He wills.”

Please advise. A friend of mine has seen his daughter naked and she has seen her father nude and he had some times practiced physical (oral) sex (but not intercourse). She is 13 years old.

Please state what is the status for him, his marriage, and what should be done?

He has repented now and done taubah, and come on the right path.

What your friend has done is a serious sin and a crime. He should be reported to the authorities, and prosecuted. He belongs in prison.

Maybe your friend has stopped his behavior, maybe not. Sexual predators tend not to stop, instead they simply shift their predations from one victim to another. NGO: One in 10 abused victims may turn into sex offender

PETALING JAYA: To say that cases of sexual abuse of boys are under reported is an understatement as one in three sexually abused children is believed to be male.

This finding was based on indirect disclosures filed by victims to the Protect And Save The Children Association of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, a registered non-profit organisation advocating children's rights.

One in 10 of these victims may turn into a young sex offender if they are not given counselling and therapy sessions, said association director Madeleine Yong.

“Much of our society are still unable to accept disclosures from boys who were sodomised or sexually abused.

“Even with female victims, the first reaction is usually blatantly blaming the children what more with the boys, who are more commonly expected to defend themselves?” Yong told the The Star yesterday.

On Monday, Health Ministry Disease Control Division deputy director Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar said sexual abuse of boys might be under reported due to shame and stigma attached to such cases.

In his keynote address at the International Congress of Legal Medicine 2011: Child Abuse and Neglect in Putrajaya, Dr Zainal said a maltreated child might have negative effects on the development of the individual's brain and nervous systems.

This may expose an individual to a higher risk in abusive and sexual behaviours, among others, in adulthood.

Social psychologist Datuk Dr Chiam Heng Keng concurred, saying that paedophiles prey upon victims of both sexes.

Dr Chiam is the Malaysian representative (children) to the Asean Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children.

“If left untreated, there is a high chance the victim will turn into a sex offender himself.

“The victims would feel they need an outlet to appease their guilt and anger by doing the same to another person, as the abuser has stimulated a perverted desire in them,” Dr Chiam said, adding that Malaysia lacked an awareness of abused children's right to express in defence of themselves.

What is spondylosis?

Spondylosis is a wearing down or degeneration of the spine caused by wear and tear on the joints. Deterioration most frequently involves the cartilage and bones in either the cervical spine (joints of the neck), sometimes referred to as cervical spondylosis, or the lumbar spine, sometimes referred to as lumbar degenerative disc disease. Spondylosis can also affect the middle section of the spine, called the thoracic spine.

Degeneration of the spine is most commonly caused by normal wear and tear, which is why it is far more common for people over age 60 to have symptoms of spondylosis. However, degeneration can begin as early as age 30, and there are many cases of lumbar symptoms appearing by age 40. This degeneration can be associated with several other phenomena, such as spinal stenosis (abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal), osteoarthritis of the spinal joints, or degenerative disc disease, in which the disc dries out (becomes dehydrated) and loses functionality.

Spondylosis cannot be cured, but pain management and physical therapy, and in some cases surgery, can improve your mobility and comfort.

Spondylosis is not life threatening, but in some cases it can lead to nerve damage that can be debilitating. Seek immediate medical care (call 911) for serious symptoms of nerve compression, such as loss of sensation in the limbs or shoulders, a complete loss of balance, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Also seek immediate care for serious symptoms, such as abnormal sensations or sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, paralysis, and changes in level of consciousness.

Seek prompt medical care if you are being treated for spondylosis but mild symptoms recur or are persistent.

As I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many of our stakeholders over the past 6 months, I have learned a lot. I’ve gained a greater appreciation of the complexities of studying CAM, the challenges to conducting rigorous research, and the need for setting clear priorities for the years ahead.

I’m proud of the work the Center has done in its first 10 years. Establishing a viable research enterprise in this field is a daunting task. We have attracted outstanding investigators from the leading academic institutions, established collaborative partnerships with CAM practitioners, and created training programs to expand the capacity for research in the years ahead. These are all fundamental steps to ensuring that the science of discovery on CAM will grow and mature.

These are important steps. But the public is often impatient, and we frequently hear “But what are the answers? What works, and what doesn’t?” News stories on CAM are numerous, but individual stories and even single research reports do not constitute an evidence base. Evidence-based medicine relies instead on careful, systematic reviews of the entire body of scientific literature using methods of information technology and statistics. One index of progress for NCCAM is an assessment of where we stand in the development of the evidence-base for CAM.

Acupuncture provides a telling example. American interest in acupuncture was piqued in the early 1970s with President Nixon’s visit to China. The press corps included New York Times correspondent James Reston, who, following emergency appendectomy surgery in Beijing, reported that acupuncture treatment had relieved his post-surgical pain and discomfort—a report that made headlines far beyond the New York Times. But Reston’s experience was met with skepticism and did not lead to changes in patterns of post-op pain management.

But things are changing. NCCAM has been steadily building a portfolio of basic and clinical research to understand acupuncture’s mechanisms of action. Basic studies have probed local effects of traditional acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and also laser acupuncture, as well as exploited brain imaging techniques to show, for example, that acupuncture affects structures of the limbic system involved in the affective/suffering components of pain. Neurochemical studies are revealing the effects of acupuncture on neurotransmitters such as noradrenaline and endogenous opioid peptides that are associated with descending endogenous pain-modulating systems. Other neurochemical studies are exploring whether acupuncture increases nonenzymatic nitric oxide generation and the role that may play in acupuncture effects, such as inducing noradrenaline release.

Clinical research is also keeping pace. A systematic review of randomized controlled clinical trials of acupuncture for postoperative pain, published in the August 2008 issue of the British Journal of Anaesthesia, demonstrated that acupuncture had clear value, that it decreased pain intensity and lowered opioid side effects. Recently, the American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians published new clinical treatment guidelines for persistent back pain that now include acupuncture as a treatment option.

The promise that Mr. Reston saw in this traditional practice is becoming a part of the portfolio of tools that providers can use to care for patients. Our job at NCCAM is to apply rigorous science in the pursuit of such areas of promise, and steadily build an evidence base.

A few months ago I ran across this massage technique while looking over the menu of services at Canyon Ranch Spa Club in Las Vegas. After a bit of googling, I came across the website and decided to pick up the DVD from Lhasa OMS along with a few new cupping sets.

The technique is adapted for body workers and uses much lighter suction than TCM cupping. The theory is that the lighter suction stimulates the lymph system to loosen adhesions and pull stuck fluid into the lymph system where it is easier to eliminate. I started utilizing massage cupping in my practice and found it is great to help loosen up the body before doing traditional cupping techniques. It is not as effective for those with significant stagnation, but it is great for those with mild blockages who also need a little detoxification and TLC.

I just had this done last week and found it wonderfully relaxing on areas of mild tension, but in the parts that need a lot of work, I was yearning a bit for some strong stationary cupping. If I could have followed it up with some acupuncture, it would have been perfect - I even fell asleep a bit during the treatment.

In Chinese medicine, pain is the result of a blockage to the flow of energy or blood. Once the normal flow of energy and blood is re-established with acupuncture, pain disappears. A trained acupuncturist has a variety of methods and tools to use to achieve this goal.

In the case of low back pain typically the acupuncturist first identifies the specific blocked acupuncture channels. Acupuncture is commonly applied to the site of the pain and at sites away from the pain that lie along the same channel. The needles usually are retained in the body for 20-30 minutes, after which they are removed and disposed of.

Frequently, relief is experienced right away, though any degree of results can be felt at that time. After a course of several visits, usually four to six if the case is uncomplicated, the problem is frequently resolved or diminished to the extent that acupuncture is no longer needed. When the problem is chronic and has persisted for months or years, it may take longer to resolve.

Patty Gift remembers the severe pain of pre-menstrual syndrome, before she tried acupuncture. “I was not functional. So, I was irritable. I was very fuzzy in my thinking.”

She tried everything from dietary changes to over the counter medications. Even the things that typically work, didn’t work for Patty. “I was exercising, which I had read would really help. At one point I was working with a gynecologist and taking birth control pills.” Patty was beginning to lose hope until someone suggested the ancient Chinese treatment acupuncture.

Acupuncturist Dr. Frank Lipman says the number of women seeing him for PMS is increasing. While there are no major clinical studies on PMS and acupuncture, Dr. Lipman knows what he sees in his patients. “At least 75 percent of women get better with acupuncture for PMS,” Dr. Lipman said.

A practitioner will insert thin needles into specific parts of the body. Dr. Lipman says this releases blocked energy, easing symptoms like bloating and sweating. “They feel like this load has been released or this pressure that they were holding in has been released,” Lipman said. Patty felt better after just one session. “I feel much more clear-headed. My mood is much better.”

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has no stance on the treatment, but some members believe it can work. “Acupuncture probably affects the hormones of the brain called endorphins, which make people feel better,” explained Dr. Veronic Ravnikar. Dr. Ravnikar says she would never deter a patient from trying it, but stresses it’s important for women to see a doctor prior to any type of alternative treatment. “Along with the treatments, I always suggest lifestyle changes: exercise, good nutrition, and multi-vitamins.”

Acupuncture for pre-menstrual syndrome typically lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour per session. Most experts recommend regular treatments in order to maintain the best results.

Acupuncture May Help Treat Depression In Expectant Mothers

According to a new study, acupuncture may be an effective way to treat depression in pregnant women.

Currently, nearly 20 percent of women report symptoms of despair during pregnancy, while approximately 10 percent meet the criteria for major depression. Coping with the disorder can be extremely difficult for many women who do not want to take anti-depressants during pregnancy out of concern for the developing fetus.

“Depression during pregnancy is an issue of concern because it has negative effects on both the mother and the baby as well as the rest of the family,” said study author Rosa Schnyer.

In the study, a total of 150 pregnant women meeting the standards for major depressive disorder were separated into three groups. One-third of the respondents were given acupuncture specific for depression, another one-third was given control or “sham” acupuncture and the others were treated only with massage.

The researchers found that the women who received depression-specific acupuncture experienced a significantly greater decrease in symptoms related to the disorder.

Acupuncture may also be used to help alleviate symptoms associated with headaches, lower back pain and menstrual cramps.

In 2010, 250,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but there is some good news: the disease’s death rate is steadily declining. That’s largely due to modern treatments, but they often come with intense side effects.

Quintell Williams is getting ready for what may just be the most relaxing part of her day. Believe it or not, it’s being poked with a dozen or so acupuncture needles.

Quintell is a two time breast cancer survivor. She’s gone through a mastectomy, reconstruction, chemotherapy and radiation. But what’s really hurting her now is a side effect of her breast cancer medicine.

“There’s joint pain. Sometimes you feel like your joints are on fire actually, you know. That’s the basic side effect that I would feel more than anything,” said Quintell.

Even though these drugs can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurring by almost 50 percent, the joint pain and stiffness cane be so severe.

“That a lot more women are stopping their medication than we originally realized and adherence is a big problem, which is unfortunate for a medication that works so well,” said Dr. Dawn Hershman, of New York Presbyterian-Columbia Medical Center.

But rather than add yet another drug like a painkiller, Dr. Hershman decided to see if acupuncture might help. Quintell volunteered for a study where half the women got acupuncture for their pain, and the other half got the acupuncture needles placed in a sham or fake way.

“To get your desired treatment effect you have to hit certain acupuncture points with the acupuncture needle and that is real acupuncture,” said acupuncturist Jillian Chapodice.

“There was about a 50 percent reduction in pain and stiffness in women that have gotten true acupuncture compared to the women that had gotten sham acupuncture, or fake acupuncture,” added Dr. Hershman.

Quintell was in the group that got real acupuncture and real pain relief.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say maybe a 3. It had been a 10 because it was very painful,” said Quintell.

* Gonorrhea: This sexually transmitted bacterial infection most often infects the cervix. Half the time, there are no symptoms, but vaginal discharge and itching may occur.
* Chlamydia: The bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis causes this sexually transmitted infection. Only half of women will have symptoms, which may include vaginal discharge or pain in the vagina or abdomen.
* Vaginal cancer: Cancer of the vagina is extremely rare. Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge are symptoms.
* Vaginal prolapse: Due to weakened pelvic muscles (usually from childbirth), the rectum, uterus or bladder pushes on the vagina. In severe cases, the vagina protrudes out of the body

The causes of sexual problems are as varied and complex as the human race. Some problems stem from a simple, reversible physical problem. Others can stem from more serious medical conditions, difficult life situations, or emotional problems. Still others have a combination of causes. Any of the following can contribute to sexual problems:

Relationship problems - Discord in other aspects of the relationship, such as distribution of labor, childrearing, or money, can cause sexual problems. Issues of control or even abuse in the relationship are especially harmful to sexual harmony. Such problems can prevent a woman from communicating her sexual wants and needs to her partner.

Emotional problems - Depression, anxiety (about sex or other things), stress, resentment, and guilt can all affect a woman's sexual function.

Insufficient stimulation - A woman's (or her partner's) lack of knowledge about sexual stimulation and response may prevent a woman from achieving a satisfactory experience. Poor communication between partners can also be a culprit here.

Gynecologic problems - A number of pelvic disorders can cause pain in intercourse and thus decrease satisfaction.

Vaginal dryness - The most common reason for this in younger women is insufficient stimulation. In older women, the decrease in estrogen that occurs in menopause is the cause of vaginal dryness. Poor lubrication can also be linked to hormone imbalances and other illnesses and to certain medications. It can inhibit arousal or make intercourse uncomfortable.

Vaginismus - This is a painful spasm of the muscles surrounding the vaginal opening that causes the vaginal opening to "tighten." It can prevent penetration or make penetration extremely painful. Vaginismus can be caused by injuries or scars from surgery, abuse, or childbirth, by infection, or by irritation from douches, spermicides, or condoms. It can also be caused by fear.

Sexually transmitted diseases - Gonorrhea, herpes, genital warts, chlamydia, and syphilis are infectious diseases spread by sexual contact. They can cause changes in the genitals that make sex uncomfortable or even painful.

Vaginitis - Inflammation and irritation of vaginal tissues due to infection or other causes can make intercourse uncomfortable or painful.

Endometriosis, pelvic mass, ovarian cyst, surgical scars - Any of these can cause an obstruction that prevents intercourse or makes it difficult or painful.

Pelvic inflammatory disease - This is an infection of the vagina that moves up into the cervix, uterus, and ovaries. It can be very painful on its own and make intercourse extremely painful.

Ms. Kumar, then 29, went to see an obstetrician-gynecologist for help.

“The doctor said there wasn’t anything she could do for me because I was under age 35 and had been trying to conceive for less than year — even though it was clear something was not quite right,” Ms. Kumar explained. “She said, ‘come back in a year.’ ”

Ms. Kumar, who has a master’s degree in public health and lives in Jamaica Plain, Mass., decided to try an alternative. She went to see an acupuncturist who said, “I can help; give me 12 weeks.”

Because her insurer, like most, did not cover acupuncture, Ms. Kumar had to pay for the $70 weekly treatments she hoped would put her cycle on a more normal schedule. After the first few treatments, that seemed to be working. Two months later, Ms. Kumar was pregnant. There is no way of knowing for sure whether it was the acupuncture or the gynecologist’s keep-on-trying advice that helped Ms. Kumar conceive.

But a growing number of people are turning to acupuncture for help with conditions including infertility, chronic pain, depression and menopause symptoms. And they are turning to it even though financially it remains a largely out-of-pocket form of health care.

In a 2007 survey, 3.1 million adults reported using acupuncture in the previous 12 months, up from 2.1 million in a 2002 survey, according to the government’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a unit of the National Institutes of Health.

The center’s Web site is mainly neutral on the question of acupuncture’s effectiveness, and it urges people to go to a medical doctor — not an acupuncturist — to have a medical condition diagnosed. Acupuncture can have a powerful effect on your system, but serious ailments typically require a dose of Western medicine, like a course of antibiotics, a prescription-strength pain killer or even surgery.

Still, there are a handful of well-respected studies indicating that acupuncture can be an effective treatment for a range of conditions, like chronic headaches, osteoarthritis, depression in pregnancy and low back pain.

Western doctors are beginning to embrace it, sometimes sending their patients to acupuncturists for specific conditions. And the federal Food and Drug Administration takes it at least seriously enough to regulate acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners.

But insurers have been reluctant to cover acupuncture. And even in the relatively rare instances when insurers do, they might pay for only a few visits or a specific condition.

Ms. Kumar was able to get a financial break by using money from her flexible spending account at work. “It was expensive,” she said, “but probably not as expensive as infertility treatments would have been.”

When she was ready to have a second child, she again went to her acupuncturist, Claire McManus, and became pregnant within months.

Proponents say that acupuncture, in addition to helping treat existing conditions, can also help prevent problems from occurring in the first place. Some devotees of acupuncture even say they believe treatments keep them healthy and out of the doctor’s office, potentially saving them money.

“We’re seeing a small but growing number of clients come to our clinic for wellness tune-ups,” said Angela Grasso, director of clinical services at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Manhattan, which is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges and trains students to become licensed acupuncturists.

To receive a license to practice acupuncture in New York State, one must have completed 4,050 hours of course work, done 650 hours of clinical training and treated 250 patients. Once students have completed those requirements, they must pass a national certification examination in acupuncture.

Marcus Berardino, 41, a massage therapist and yoga instructor in Brooklyn, swears by the acupuncture treatments he receives regularly. “Combined with other natural remedies like biking, healthy eating and a little daily meditating,” he said, “it keeps me healthy and fairly balanced.”

Some hospitals are beginning to offer acupuncture to inpatients for pain and anxiety.

“When patients receive acupuncture before or after surgery, their anxiety is less, and their pain is reduced,” said Arya Nielsen, director of the acupuncture fellowship program at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. “They need less pain medication and so have less side effects from the medication.”

Beth Israel patients receive their acupuncture treatments free through the postgraduate fellowship program run by Dr. Nielsen, who has doctorate in the philosophies of medicine.

For at least 2,000 years Chinese healers have used acupuncture to treat pain and other ailments. Now Western doctors want proof that it works.

There is little dispute that people feel better after receiving the treatment, in which thin needles are inserted deeply into the skin at specific points on the body. But are they benefiting from acupuncture itself, or just getting a placebo effect?

The debate was fueled last week by a study in the journal Arthritis Care and Research. Researchers from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston found that among 455 patients with painful knee arthritis, acupuncture delivered no more relief than a sham treatment.

Actually, patients got significant pain relief from both treatments - an average reduction of one point on a scale of 1 to 7. And critics contend that the study was poorly designed.

For one thing, they note, patients in both groups received treatment with needles and electrical stimulation; the main difference was that in the sham group, the needles were not inserted as deeply and the stimulation was far shorter in duration.

In the real world, however, a trained acupuncturist would customize the treatment to a patient's specific symptoms. But in this study, the patients in the ''real'' acupuncture group all received needles inserted in the same way.

Rather than proving that acupuncture does not work, in other words, the study may suggest that it works even when administered poorly. But the real lesson, acupuncture supporters say, is how difficult it can be to apply Western research standards to an ancient healing art.

''People argue that there really are no inactive acupuncture points - pretty much wherever you put a needle in the body is an active point,'' said Dr. Alex Moroz, a trained acupuncturist who directs the musculoskeletal rehabilitation program at New York University. ''There is a body of literature that argues that the whole approach to studying acupuncture doesn't lend itself to the Western reductionist scientific method.''

But the study's lead author, Dr. Maria E. Suarez-Almazor, notes that the sham treatment was developed with the help of trained acupuncturists. In a drug study, an equal response in the treatment and placebo groups would prove the drug does not work, she says.

''We really worked with acupuncturists who are trained in the Chinese traditional style and asked them to come up with a sham that could be credible,'' Dr. Suarez-Almazor said. ''We didn't plan a study trying to show that acupuncture didn't work. The results came out with no difference between the groups.''

The MD Anderson research and other recent acupuncture studies have fueled speculation that the prick of a needle, whether from real acupuncture or a sham version, can influence the way the body processes and transmits pain signals. A 2007 study of 1,200 back-pain patients, financed by insurance companies in Germany, showed that about half the patients in both real and sham acupuncture groups had less pain after treatment, compared with only 27 percent of those receiving physical therapy or other traditional back care.

When the German researchers tracked how much pain medicine the patients used, they detected a noticeable difference between real acupuncture and the sham treatment. Only 15 percent of patients in the acupuncture group required extra pain drugs, compared with 34 percent in the sham group. The group receiving conventional back therapy fared even worse than those receiving fake acupuncture: 59 percent of those patients needed extra pain pills.

The researchers, who published their findings in Archives of Internal Medicine, speculated that inserting needles in or around an area of pain may have caused a ''super placebo'' effect, touching off a series of reactions that changed the way the body experienced pain.

Still another study, this one financed by the National Institutes of Health and published in 2004, found that acupuncture significantly reduced pain and improved function in knee arthritis patients compared with a sham treatment or routine knee care.

Remarkable therapeutic effects has been obtained by laser acupuncture to treat 88 cases of chronic prostatitis from Oct 1985 to May 1986 .
Patients who had been diagnosed as Chronic Prostatitis and are not responded to other treatment , were treated with acupuncture .

Criteria of diagnosis :Bearing down pain of the perineum , pain of the lower abdomen and the waist , frequent micturation , impairment of sexual function , and other common clinical symptoms related . Significant swelling and tenderness of the prostate during digital examination per anus . Criteria of Therapeutic Effect : Cure ; Disappearance of subjective symptoms , no tenderness during digital examination of prostate , no inflammatory manifestation of prostatic fluid, size of prostate reduced to normal range.

Treatment: Acupuncture needle were inserted at point of Hegu LI 4, Quich LI 11 Huiyin Ren 1 and Chuku Ren 2.

Result: 88 cases of chronic prostatitis were treated by combine classical acupuncture needle and laser acupuncture method, with a cure of 53 – 54 % and effective rate of 98.9 %. Its advantages are as follow: High effective rate, shorter therapeutic course, no adverse reactions, safe and easy to manipulate, as compare with other methods
( allopathic) adopted at home and abroad.

In resent years, we have treated hyperlipaemia with acupuncture. Two groups were used: The 1st Group involve Sanyinjiao, Zusanli and Neiguan and the 2nd Group involve Leique, Yanglingquan GB 34 and Fenglong ST 40 which was used alternate every day, according to the change of symptoms, other points would also selected.
Reducing method of stimulation usually was used in acupuncture process which was about 15 minutes and 10 therapy constituted a course of treatment. The patient blood lipids was measured at beginning and after acupuncture.

However the treatment was applied according to the theory of TCM. As we know that those acupoint of Sanyinjiao, Zsuanli, Neiguan, Lieque, Yanglingquan and Fenlong are very effective of building up the spleen , dissolving the spleen, balance the dampness, removing the stagnation of Liver “Qi” , etc.

The result as follows: Blood lipids of 73 cases were decreased among the 82 cases, about 89 % of the patient, lowered the level of cholestrol very much.
Therefore, it is suggested that the two group points are very useful in treating hyperpaemia. The research is still continue.

CONORARY HEART DISEASE is the main ailment which influence the life of human being. It belongs to the criteria of “ Angina Pectoris” According to the Chinese Philosophy – precordial pain caused by cold evil” etc. Clinical observation were carried on 36 patients of coronary heart disease at our hospital by using Acupoint – Neiguan, as suggested by TCM acupuncture theory more than 2000 years ago.

Clinical Materials:
Of 36 cases - 19 patients ( 53 % ) were Male , 17 patients ( 47 % ) female.
Female age ranged from 78 to 46 , with the average of 59 years old.
12 cases from 46 – 59 years old: 22 cases from 60 – 69 years ; 2 cases 70 –78 years. The longest suffered CHD for 15 years and the shortest, 6 months.

Therapeutic Method
Point Selection : Neiguan P 6
Manipulation : The point is located 2 cun above the transverse crease of the wrist, needling vertically and quickly, with a depth of ½ to 1 cun or 2 - 2.5 cm, twisting and twirling quickly for 2 minutes to make soreness, numbness, heaviness and distension sensation ( deqi) and let the needle sensation propagated to the elbow, axillary and the chest and retained the needle for 30 minutes, manipulation once between it, it should be done by qualified Acupuncture practitioner.

Therapeutic Course: Once daily for 6 treatments for a week. And continue the treatment for at least 3 weeks.

Therapeutic Results:
Of 36 cases, 16 patients feel relief all the main symptoms such as pain in the chest, palpitation, chest oppression, etc. were disappeared and another 18 patient did not have any pain at all.
Of 36 cases, 26 were having chest pain and all disappeared after needling. It show that acupuncture had obvious effect of promoting the blood circulation and disperse blood stasis, dredging the meridians and stopping pain. Of 29 palpitation cases, all were restored. It indicated that it had calm the heart and tranquilize effect. Of 35 patients with chest oppression, 33 recovered, 1 improved, 1 aggravated. This suggested that Neiguan points regulate ‘qi’ , strengthening heart, it also acted as a heart tonic.

MIGRAINE is the most serious ailment of all headache. Many drugs, from as simple as Panadol, Ponstan, Ergot to B-blockers are tried by allopathic doctors to treat this syndrome, but failed to cure. Acupuncture has been tried in 100 cases with success rate of about 80 % . The mechanism of action in these cases can be explained on the basis of Pomerenz Theory. Many studies have been done in this regard in the western world. The Pakistan experience is being submitted.

32 female and 8 male patients were referred to POE Hospital, WAH Cantonment, Pakistan. 6 needles were inserted on different acupoints of the body, electrically stimulated for 30 minutes and followed for 6 months. Frequency of headache and duration was reduced by 75 % to 65 % respectively. 70 % of the patients were improved enough to stop their use in drugs after treatment. 21 out of 40 patients were completely well. Common symptoms of migraine headache such as vomiting, bed rest, absence of work was reduced by 90 %
The normal point for migraine is Sishengcong EX 6 and ashi points.

Parkinsonism- 70 yrs retired teacher had slurred speech with tremors in right hand . Use of scalp Acupuncture and treating the five elements is the basis of treatment in parkinsonism. This patient was completely well after 30-40 days of treatment. A Businessman had family history of parkinsonism .
The list and the quantity of drugs were adding on and the disease was getting progressed. Acupuncture was used to control the disease. Acupuncture was started to improve his cognitive ability, learning ability, grasping capacity thereby improving his IQ. Boy responded well started behaving normally, stopped laughing and staring abnormally, learnt community living. Finally he could be admitted in a normal school but in lower grade as compared to the children of his age.

Epilepsy- 28 yr printer R/O Aurangabad was having Grand Mal Epilepsy. His MRI was normal, EEG confirmed the diagnosis. He was on regular antileptics. Inspite of the drugs he used to have episodes of attacks 2-3 times a month .He suffered with several tongue bites Acupuncture diagnosis in epilepsy is mainly dependent on five element study of the case. Perfect diagnosis gives quick results.

The number of attacks are reduced during the first course of acupuncture . Further treatments are then meant to reduce the doses of antileptics, this has to be done gradually and cautiously. The above mentioned case was successfully treated, he now runs a courier agency. 32 yrs female R/O Pune was suffering from Epileptic seizures 2-3 times a week . (NaturalNews) Acupuncture works as well at treating lazy eye as conventional Western therapies, according to a study conducted by researchers from the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

"Lazy eye," officially known as amblyopia, is characterized by markedly poor vision in one eye. It is the most common cause of childhood vision problems and can be easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses before the age of 7. After that age, the condition is harder to correct and is usually treated with therapies that deliberately handicap the strong eye in order to force improvement in the weak eye. One common therapy involves wearing a patch over the strong eye, while another involves using vision-blurring drops in that eye instead.

For the new study, researchers assigned 88 Chinese children between the ages of 7 and 12 who suffered from lazy eye either to undergo five traditional sessions per week for the condition or to wear a patch over their good eye for two hours per day. All participants were also given new glasses and instructed to perform near-vision activities for an hour a day.

After 25 weeks, 70 percent of participants in both groups had improved by two lines on an eye chart, the equivalent of improving from 20/40 to 20/25. In terms of recovery, acupuncture was far more effective than an eye patch: only 17 percent of children in the eye patch group experienced a complete recovery, compared with 42 percent of children in the acupuncture group.

Acupuncture provides distinct advantages over conventional therapies, in that it imposes limited hardship on the patient. In contrast, vision-blurring drops can make homework difficult, and children can face severe social stigma for wearing eye patches.

Unfortunately, five weekly acupuncture sessions require a greater time commitment from parents. In addition, few acupuncturists in the United States are trained to treat lazy eye.

Nevertheless, the researchers hailed their findings as promising.

"Don't knock Chinese medicine," senior researcher Robert Ritch said. "It's been around for more than 3,000 years and there's a lot we don't understand yet."

But now researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have found alternative, non-drug therapies that improve the hormone levels and menstrual bleeding pattern in women with PCOS -- acupuncture and physical exercise.

In the new study, just published in the American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism, a group of women with PCOS were given acupuncture where the needles were stimulated both manually and with a weak electric current. A second group of study participants was told to exercise at least three times a week, while a third group acted as controls. All the women were given information on the importance of regular exercise and a healthy diet.

"The study shows that both acupuncture and exercise reduce high levels of testosterone and lead to more regular menstruation," researcher Elisabet Stener-Victorin, who headed the study, said in a statement to the media. "Of the two treatments, the acupuncture proved more effective."

Although PCOS impacts one woman in ten, the cause isn't known. "However, we've recently demonstrated that women with PCOS have a highly active sympathetic nervous system, the part that isn't controlled by our will, and that both acupuncture and regular exercise reduced levels of activity in this system compared with the control group, which could be an explanation for the results," Stener-Victorin added.

Acupuncture May Benefit Undiagnosed Patients

A recent study carried out by a team of researchers from the Institute of Health Services Research, at the University of Exeter’s Peninsula Medical School has found that patients who are suffering from unexplained symptoms may benefit from having five-element acupuncture added to their usual care.

According to the study, which was published in the British Journal of General Practice, frequently attending patients with medically unexplained symptoms reported significantly improved overall well-being after being treated with acupuncture for 26 weeks.

The study examined 80 patients who were experiencing symptoms that were medically unexplained. Half of them were treated with acupuncture alongside conventional medical treatments for 26 weeks while the others were not. Those who were treated with acupuncture reported a number of benefits that were not experienced by those who were not treated with acupuncture.

Among the most commonly reported benefits was a dramatic increase in energy levels.

For the one in five patients who have undiagnosed symptoms, the inclusion of this relatively safe therapy in their treatment may be great news.

As well, these findings may reduce the strains that undiagnosed patients can put on health systems. Patients who have symptoms that are undiagnosed by medicine are twice as expensive to treat as patients with a diagnosis.

Acupuncture Effective for Undetermined IllnessDespite the advances of modern medicine, one in five patients has symptoms that are unexplained and untreated, contributing to stress for both the provider and individual.

Further, studies have shown that the cost of managing the treatment of a patient with medically unexplained symptoms can be twice that of a patient with a diagnosis.

In an effort to provide a solution, a UK research team performed a clinical randomized controlled study on the efficacy of acupuncture for the undiagnosed disorders. Included in the research design was a linked interview of each patient’s subjective opinion of the intervention.

Some 80 patients from GP practices across London were selected to have five-element acupuncture added to their usual care.

The results of the research are published in the British Journal of General Practice.

The study group was made up of 80 adults, 80 percent female with an average age of 50 years and from a variety of ethnic backgrounds who had consulted their GP at least eight times in the past year.

Nearly 60 percent reported musculoskeletal health problems, of which almost two-thirds had been present for a year.

The patients were randomly divided into an acupuncture group and a control group. Eight acupuncturists administered individual five-element acupuncture to the acupuncture group immediately, up to 12 sessions over 26 weeks. The same numbers of treatments were made available to the control group after 26 weeks.

At 26 weeks the patients were asked to complete a number of questionnaires including the individualized health status questionnaire “Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile.”

The acupuncture group registered a significantly improved overall score when compared with the control group.

They also showed improved well-being but did not show any change in GP and other clinical visits or the number of medications they were taking. Between 26 and 52 weeks, the acupuncture group maintained their improvement and the control group, now receiving their acupuncture treatments, showed “catch up” improvement.

Results from the associated qualitative study, which focused on the patients’ experiences, supported the quantitative work.

This tool identified that participating patients had a variety of longstanding symptoms and disability including chronic pain, fatigue and emotional problems which affected their ability to work, socialize and carry out everyday tasks.

Participating patients reported that their acupuncture consultations became increasingly valuable. They appreciated the amount of time they had with each acupuncturist and the interactive and holistic nature of the sessions – there was a sense that the practitioners were listening to their concerns and, via therapy, doing something positive about them.

This patient-centered orientation encouraged individuals to take an active role in their treatment, resulting in cognitive and behavioral lifestyle changes, such as a new self-awareness about what caused stress in their lives, and a subsequent ability to deal with stress more effectively; and taking their own initiatives based on advice from the acupuncturists about diet, exercise, relaxation and social activities.

Comments from participating patients included: “the energy is the main thing I have noticed. You know, yeah, it’s marvelous! Where I was going out and cutting my grass, now I’m going out and cutting my neighbor’s after because he’s elderly”; “I had to reduce my medication. That’s the big help actually, because medication was giving me more trouble…side effects”; and “It kind of boosts you, somehow or another.”

Dr. Charlotte Paterson, who managed the randomized control trial and the longitudinal study of patients’ experiences, commented: “Our research indicates that the addition of up to 12 five-element acupuncture consultations to the usual care experienced by the patients in the trial was feasible and acceptable and resulted in improved overall well-being that was sustained for up to a year.

“This is the first trial to investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment to those with unexplained symptoms, and the next development will be to carry out a cost-effectiveness study with a longer follow-up period. While further studies are required, this particular study suggests that GPs may recommend a series of five-element acupuncture consultations to patients with unexplained symptoms as a safe and potentially effective intervention.”

She added: “Such intervention could not only result in potential resource savings for the (National Health Service), but would also improve the quality of life for a group of patients for whom traditional biomedicine has little in the way of effective diagnosis and treatment.”

Back pain sufferers will get improved access to treatments by acupuncturists, osteopaths and chiropractors on the NHS in an effort to reduce the misery, welfare bills and inability to work caused by the condition, it was announced today.

Advice issued by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice) recommends that the millions of people who develop persistent non-specific low back pain receive up to nine sessions of spinal manipulation or 10 sessions of acupuncture over 12 weeks.

Experts praised Nice's first guidance on how to tackle back pain as a breakthrough in treating a condition that costs the country an estimated £5.1bn every year, including £1bn of the NHS budget, and leads to the loss of around 5m working days. The problem affects around one in three adults each year and leads to 2.6 million people visiting their GP.

While most people with acute back pain recover within six weeks, an estimated 7% go on to develop a chronic form of the condition, which in the worst cases can lead to immobility and inability to work. Some GPs already offer acupuncture and some primary care trusts pay for patients to have manipulation privately. But Professor Martin Underwood, a Coventry GP who helped to draw up the advice, said current NHS treatment of back pain was "patchy".

In future sufferers in England and Wales will be given a choice of attending exercise classes, undergoing spinal manipulation or having acupuncture. Underwood said providing these treatments to patients in England and Wales may save the NHS money in the long term.

It will cost the NHS £24.4m to provide acupuncture and another £16m for manipulative therapy. But £33.6m will be saved by stopping the practice of injecting therapeutic substances into people's backs and £13.2m from reducing the number of sufferers sent for an MRI scan or X-ray.

Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, welcomed the guidelines. "This is good news for GPs and patients. Most GPs deal with patients with backache every day of the week," he said. "I welcome the endorsement of some complementary therapies for which there is a clearer evidence base."

Dr Dries Hettinga, of the patients organisation BackCare, said: "These treatments are all effective. In future, virtually all people who get low back pain should be prevented from developing the serious form of the problem."

But it is unclear when patients will be able to routinely access the treatments on the NHS and if the NHS will pay for patients to visit private practitioners for treatment.

Laurence Kirk, head of osteopathy at Oxford Brookes University and osteopath to the Royal Shakespeare Company, said: "As osteopaths we knew that our treatment worked for most back pain sufferers, and it's good to have official recognition of that. This should mean that the public have greater access to the services of skilled manipulators who will alleviate pain."

But some opponents of alternative medicine criticised Nice. Edzard Ernst, professor of complementary medicine at Exeter University, said Nice had "overestimated the benefit and under-estimated the risks of chiropractic spinal manipulation".

I have spent the past two years researching amongst other things the property of water
and have made discoveries that prove very simply how acupuncture works. I think it will
not come as too much of a surprise to you to discover that it is nothing whatsoever
to do with chemistry but it is all to do with the unique properties of water and vibrations.

Western science ignores things that it does not understand, and energy

Penyembuhan Penyakit Melalui Sentuhan

Tahukah Anda, sebenarnya kita punya kemampuan untuk menyembuhkan penyakit, menyalurkan energi positif dan menyampaikan ekspresi kasih sayang tanpa perlu mengeluarkan kata-kata?

Sebagai makhluk sosial, manusia memiliki kebutuhan akan kehangatan, keakraban, dan kedekatan sebagai pribadi (need for intimacy). Menurut psikolog Ratih Ibrahim, pemenuhan kebutuhan itu bisa dipenuhi lewat sentuhan fisik dengan orang lain. "Sentuhan, pelukan, atau genggaman adalah contoh komunikasi non verbal yang punya kekuatan dan arti lebih besar dari kata-kata," katanya.
Menurut Tiffany Field, Ph.D, direktur Touch Research Institute, kontak dari kulit ke kulit adalah makanan bagi jiwa. Sama halnya dengan makanan bagi perut kita. Itu sebabnya tindakan ini perlu untuk dijadikan kebiasaan. Sebab, jika jiwa kekurangan 'makanan', mood dan kerja hormon-hormon pun bisa terganggu.
